Weight room improvements likely around the corner for PAHS

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The plans for the addition to the Punxsutawney Area High School weight room appear to have a green light, according to Building and Maintenance committee, as reported at the most recent meeting of the School Board Wednesday.

Jim Baun, chair of Building and Maintenance, said he talked to an
inspector at PennSafe Inspection Services, who said that an engineering plan is not necessary for improvements to an existing room.

No major injuries reported in log truck rollover

This 1999 Kenworth log truck, driven by James Grove of Punxsutawney, simultaneously lost its brakes and steering while traveling north on Route 119 on Indiana Hill at 12:11 p.m. on Thursday.

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, Grove entered the runaway truck ramp, and then the truck veered to the left and rolled over.

Police said Grove was not seriously injured but was transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital by Jefferson County EMS for treatment of unknown injuries.

Episodes involving letters are among the key thematic segments of "Much Ado About Will," the two-act comedy/drama that celebrates the words of William Shakespeare.

The Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Guild is staging Robert Johanson's play at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday, and again March 8 and 9 at the auditorium of the Punxsutawney Area Middle School.

Tickets will be sold at the door.

Police: Runaway teen located

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A 14-year-old from Dayton who was reported as a runaway on Wednesday has been located, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police announced Thursday.

At 8:18 p.m. Wednesday evening, police reported that Daniel Frank Jablonski, 14, failed to return home after school on Wednesday.

He was last seen at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

Police issued an updated release at 4:30 p.m. Thursday reported that Jablonski had been located.

No further details were provided.

CRAZY BIRDS RELAY TEAM TURNS CHOCOLATE-COVERED STRAWBERRIES INTO A SUCCESS

PUNXSUTAWNEY — This past Valentine’s Day brought out the talent and determination of five local women whose goal was to make a difference while providing a tasty treat.

For the past two years, the Crazy Birds Relay for Life team has worked hard to make and sell chocolate-covered strawberries. This year, the goal was to sell close to 1,000 dozen and that goal was nearly met, with the team selling 787 dozen.

The Crazy Birds was founded and created by Chantell Kaylor in 2011, in memory of her grandmother, who lost her life to lung cancer.

All together on the same page: Officials discuss school safety

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Safety First! was the theme for the community forum on school security that was held Tuesday evening in the Punxsutawney Area High School Auditorium. The moderator for the panel discussion was Tom Chelgren, retired Pennsylvania State Police officer.

Chelgren said the key component in the forum was the word safety.

The other moderators — Cindy Depp-Hutchinson and Brian Smith — took care of the questions that were brought to the table, which were written on 3x5 index cards or taken 
from the submissions on the website.

PSP-Punxsy seeks info on runaway juvenile

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are seeking the public’s help in locating a runaway Dayton juvenile.

At 8:18 p.m. Wednesday evening, PSP reported that Daniel Frank Jablonski, 14, failed to return home after school on Wednesday. He was last seen at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

Jablonski is reported to be 5-9 and weighs approximately 130 pounds. He has wavy, collar-length brown hair and blue eyes.

Jr. high soccer discussion jumps to school board meeting

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board heard a presentation from various members of the community regarding the implementation of a junior high soccer program in the district at Wednesday night's meeting.

Dr. Dave Gigliotti, soccer dad and president of the Punxsutawney Soccer Association (PSA), said that soccer is catching fire all over the world.

"We've grown our PSA program to a great level," Gigliotti said, "over 300 kids per season have participated. It is mainly for recreation, where everybody can get involved."

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Dec. 11, 2011, will live in infamy for many people in Punxsutawney, for that was the day the Punxsy Hotel died.

For the owners, Ken and Toie Neal, it was tragic night and morning.

The Punxsy Hotel was originally named the Glecker Hotel when first constructed in 1908 on North Findley Street.

Toie Neal said she first became involved with the operations of the Punxsy Hotel when her brother, the late John Mizerock, first bought it in 1967.

Report: Police charge another in Knapp's death

CLARION COUNTY — After a 29-year-old man was charged Monday with third-degree murder in the January death of 19-year-old Devan Knapp of Brookville, a second man, 32-year-old Joel Tanner Stark of Rimersburg, has been charged with several criminal conspiracy counts — including abuse of a corpse and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence — surrounding Knapp's death and the moving of her body, WJAC-TV reported Tuesday.
