DAR-sponsored Bloodmobile coming to SS.C.D. Tuesday

The Daughters of The American Revolution (DAR) are sponsoring a Bloodmobile to be held from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the SS.C.D. Auditorium.

Laudrea Frampton, DAR chaplain and Red Cross bloodmobile chair, said due to the recent storms in the northeast, many blood drives were cancelled, leaving the blood supply at an all time low.

She said it is important that all healthy individuals donate.

Donors may make appointments at: redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

All blood types are needed.

National Restaurant Association names Man of the Year Anthony to Pizza Industry Council

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It's been a busy month for Scott Anthony, owner of Fox's Pizza Den in Punxsutawney.

First, he was named Man of the Year at the Groundhog Banquet on Feb. 1, and now, the National Restaurant Association (NRA) has appointed him to the first Pizza Industry Council.

Anthony said the NRA is a non-profit organization that represents restaurants across the country and educates the public regarding food safety.

The 14 members will serve as the primary advocate for the pizza industry, he said.

Borough Council follows school board’s lead, votes to adjust tax collector rates

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council voted to change the tax collector compensation at a special meeting held Thursday.

Prior to the vote by council, Punxsutawney Borough Tax Collector Susan Mitchell said in a statement:

"It's a bit disheartening to realize that my hard work and dedication to my job is not appreciated. I have never received an unfavorable report from any taxing district or auditor. My records have balanced to the penny the entire time I have been in office."

Big Run VFD opens its heart to those in its service area in honor of Valentine’s Day

BIG RUN — The members of the Big Run Volunteer Fire Company want to say “thank you” this weekend for all the help they've received in fund-
raising this past year with a free breakfast to be served at the fire hall on Saturday.

Rick Smith, Big Run Fire Company vice president, said that the free breakfasts that have been held in the past have been for Santa Claus and the kids.

"This one we're holding on Saturday, we decided to do something for the the real supporters of the fire company," Smith said, adding that the fire company had a really good year fundraising in 2012.

Mapleview Elementary School students were encouraged to wear Valentine’s Day-themed attire to school Thursday in order to earn money for their classroom from PTO.

PAHS Drama Club seniors prepared for final show

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As the school year begins to wind down, the PAHS Drama Club is hard at work as it prepares to perform its last play of the school year.

The title of the play is "The High Schooler's Guide to the Galaxy," and it is written by Brian Starchman. The play is a comedy about four 7th graders who are about to embark on the journey of beginning high school.

The night before school is set to begin, they are visited by a couple of guides who show them how to go about surviving at the high school level.

Railroad crossing coming to Horatio Street

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A much-needed upgrade to the Horatio Street Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad crossing was approved by Punxsutawney Borough Council at Monday's voting meeting.

"PennDOT is filing an application with the PUC for the approval to upgrade the railroad flashing lights (currently there are none) and circuitry where Horatio Street Crosses, at grade, the single track owned by B&P Railroad," said Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager.

Indiana Co. Coroner follows up on death of Glen Campbell man

INDIANA — In a follow-up to the death of a Glen Campbell man on Friday evening, Indiana County Coroner Michael Baker said that toxicology tests will likely be the deciding factors in determining the cause of death of 28-year-old Christopher Brandner, whose frozen body was discovered Friday evening in a vacant lot in Glen Campbell borough.

The coroner, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police and the Indiana County District Attorney investigated at the scene of the death.

Man’s body found in White Township, Indiana County

INDIANA — Indiana County Coroner Michael Baker said an autopsy of a local man found Monday in White Township, Indiana County, has ruled out evidence of foul play.

The body of 50-year-old Jeffrey Moretti of Indiana was discovered at about 8:35 a.m. Monday near the rear entrance of the offices of Gazette Printers after employees reported for work.

Baker said the body did not appear to have indications of unexplainable trauma, and the building was not forcibly intruded upon.

Moretti was pronounced dead at the scene at 9 a.m.

County’s hazard mitigation plan commended by FEMA

BROOKVILLE — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has sent a letter commending the staff of Jefferson County for its role in developing the county hazard mitigation plan, the commissioners announced at their meeting on Tuesday.

FEMA praised the county for its support and assistance in developing the plan, which expires on July 2, 2017, and contains mitigation strategies designed to reduce future disaster losses for the purpose of making the county's communities safer and more resilient to hazards.
