A (Groundhog) Day in the life...

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The hour was 7:28 a.m., and right on time, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his humble abode to the thrill of what the members of his Inner Circle predicted to be a record crowd that had been patiently awaiting his prognostication for hours in the single-digit, below-zero-wind-chill temperatures they'd been battling all night.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It is one of the greatest honors in the small town of Punxsutawney, and deservedly so, the bequeathing of that honor comes on the eve of the town's biggest day.

It was Groundhog Eve, as many know it, Friday night, and the crowning of the Woman and Man of the Year took center stage as the end of the Groundhog Banquet approached.

Katie Laska, 2011 Woman of the Year, stepped to the microphone and delivered the ceremonial, passing-of-the-torch speech to a woman who she said she knows quite well.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Groundhog Day means a lot of things to the people of Punxsutawney and the surrounding communities, but its reach extends farther even than that — a fact echoed by Danny Rubin, one of the special guests at this year's Groundhog Banquet held the night before the big day.

"Twenty-one years ago, I sat down in a room, and I got an idea, and I wrote a movie," Rubin said. "And you always hope that somebody will see it and that maybe you'll make a difference in the world. Maybe you'll entertain some people.
