PAHGS presentation reveals local ties in Civil War

Cassidy recently spoke to members of the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society about the soldiers from Jefferson County who had a huge effect on the outcome of Civil War.

Buck season opens with a bang

Willie Hoover, 13, of Punxsutawney, nabbed this 8-point buck with a 17.5-inch spread in McCalmont Township at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Church to offer free meal once a month

December 2, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There may be no free lunches, but there are free dinners at the Presbyterian Church of Punxsutawney.

The Rev. Brett Swanson, church pastor, said the church’s congregation has committed to holding a free meal that is open to everyone the first Tuesday of every month.

This Tuesday's free dinner is from 5 to 7 p.m., and everyone is asked to enter the church from the South Findley Street entrance, which is handicap accessible.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS PARADE

December 1, 2013

The 2013 Home for the Holidays Parade delighted young and old alike Saturday evening with some spectacular floats and performers.

This year’s parade was sponsored by Punxsutawney Eagles Club, and the Walston Club sponsored the fireworks that followed.

After the parade, Santa visited with children at the Eagles, where the parade winners were announced.

CIRCLE OF TREES IN BARCLAY SQUARE

On Saturday night, the Punxsutawney Rotary Club held its annual announcement ceremony for the winners of the Circle of Trees in Barclay Square following the Home for the Holidays Parade.

Since 2007, local organizations have decked out their Christmas trees, and the Rotary Club — along with the program's sponsors — have aided those organizations with cash prizes for their participation.

"Christmas Around the World" was the 2013 theme, showcasing visual and artistic representations of different Christmas traditions in other countries.
