December 30th
In observance of New Year’s Eve, The Spirit office will be closing at 3 p.m. today.
The office will be closed New Year’s Day, and there will be no paper.
Regular office hours will resume at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
We wish all of our readers a Happy New Year.

• The Punxsutawney Spirit held Appreciation Day on Saturday at the S.S.C.D. auditorium to give a big thank-you to the community. The fun-filled day included the 3rd Annual Punxsy’s Got Talent show
and a pumpkin-decorating contest.

• The 46th Annual Groundhog Festival kicks off in Barclay Square.
July 3
• The Punxsutawney Area Community Center hosts its 17th annual 5K Run/Two-Mile Walk as part of the Groundhog Festival.
July 4
PUNXSUTAWNEY — We've heard the old saying it's either "feast or famine," and this weekend at the Punxsutawney Alliance Church, for members of the church's youth group it will be famine as they participate in a "30 Hour Famine†event to help raise awareness for world hunger.
"This is not just an event that is occurring at the Punxsutawney Alliance Church. It is put on by Worldvision across the country," said Connie Neal of the Punxsutawney Alliance Church.

• The Annual Run/Walk for Someone Special, despite a bit of rain, has record-breaking totals of 524 participants and $65,000 raised.
April 2
PUNXSUTAWNEY — While the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Connecticut will be forever etched into the memories of the students who attended school there, a Punxsutawney woman has come up with an idea that she feels might bring some comfort and peace to those students.
"I've titled it the "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" project, where we provide pillowcases with a verse from Proverbs written on them for the kids to see before they go to sleep each night," said Drinda Smith of Punxsutawney.
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club recently sponsored the “Elderly Care Gift Basket Drive†for local personal care and nursing facilities in the Punxsutawney area.
With the help of the community, the Groundhog Club was able to provide over 250 gifts for local facilities.
There were three days of deliveries, and items included arts and crafts, books, puzzles, pillows, hygiene products, DVDs and CDs, and much more.
The Groundhog Club said it could not be happier and would like to thank the entire community for its support during this holiday season.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you are a fan of a "White Christmas," then you should be happy with the pretty flakes that fell Christmas Eve throughout the area, but very few people wish for a white day after Christmas.
"We had over seven inches of snow on the ground in Punxsutawney Borough as of 5:30 p.m. today (Wednesday)," said Charlie Hoeh, Punxsutawney Borough Emergency Management coordinator.
Hoeh said the forecast called for another three to four inches throughout the night.
"We were pretty fortunate that motorists were careful while navigating through state and borough streets," he said.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In recognition of the more than 2,000 hours she has devoted to a variety of organizations and projects in the past twelve months, Jeanne Curtis of Punxsutawney has been chosen as the Volunteer of the Year by the Community Service Committee of the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR).
