The Punxsutawney Spirit held Appreciation Day on Saturday at the SS.C.D. auditorium to give a big thank-you to the community. The fun-filled day included the 3rd Annual Punxsyâs Got Talent show.
Winners of the talent show were (from left) Brielle King, third place, who sang and played the keyboard; Garrett Rowan (second place), who played the guitar; and Caleb Dinger (first place), who also sang and played the keyboard. Dinger received a $100 cash prize.
The pumpkin-decorating contest at The Spirit's Appreciation Day on Saturday drew a crowd of artistic children, including Giselle Hickox (from left), 8, Punxsutawney, âMost Beautiful Pumpkin; Madison Barr, 9, Punxsutawney, âUgliest Pumpkinâ; Rooney Kunselman, 3, Rossiter, âMost Original Ideaâ; Matthew Grusky, 7, Punxsutawney, âFunniest Pumpkinâ; and Dartanyan Pifer, 4, Punxsutawney, âSpirit Favorite.â
Dartanyan won a $25 Chamber gift certificate.
County Market sponsored the event, and Pine Valley donated the pumpkins.
Community First Bank donated treat bags to participants.

ELDERS' AND DEACONS' CONVENTION
An Elders' and Deacons' Convention was held at Pleasant Grove on Thursday, September 2. The convention was called to order by Rev. Hartman, of Punxsutawney, and Rev. H. G. Teagarden, of Oliveburg, was elected chariman, and T. M. Sadler, secretary.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Back on March 24, 2009, the community lost a man far too young when Adam Travis passed away.
Out of the tragic event, now three years past, though, Adam's mother, Chris Gigliotti, has found an inspiring way to experience a level of healing.
And thanks to her handiwork, members of the community who have suffered a similar loss will have the opportunity to experience the same when Alan Pedersen brings his and his wife's inspiring Angels Across the U.S.A. program to the Pantall Hotel.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Two Punxsutawney men recently received one of the first Golden Goose Awards for a discovery that was initially discovered in 1968.
Eugene White and Rodney White, both from Punxsutawney â actually the Juneau area â along with Della Roy and the late Jon Weber, performed a study of the pore structure of tropical coral which led to the development of an ideal bone graft material that is used commonly in surgery today.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Fall rolls in with gales of laughter as the Punxsutawney Theatre Arts Guild wraps up its 37th season with the premiere of âDaddyâs Girl,â a two-act comedy by Gary Ray Stapp.
The show will be staged at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, 11, 12, and 13 at the auditorium of the Punxsutawney Area Middle School.
A Sunday matinee is set for 2 p.m., Oct. 7. Guild veteran performer/director Tracey Young is at the helm of the latest presentation, which features a cast of 13 local actors.
YOUNG TOWNSHIP â Two were injured in an accident involving a Jefferson County EMS transport van Thursday afternoon in Young Township, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police reported.
Police said the crash occurred at the intersection of Routes 536 and 36, also known as N. Main Street, Punxsutawney.
The report said at 4:07 p.m., a 2009 Dodge Caravan operated by Andrea J. Verdill, 33, of Punxsutawney, was traveling eastbound on 536 and came to a stop at the stop sign at the roadâs intersection with Route 36.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Due to the increased usage of Punxsutawney Area School District facilities on Sunday, the school board discussed some alternatives to the fee schedule at Wednesday's school board committee meeting.
"We would like to add a phrase to our facilities use form to let people know if they are using it on Sunday, they will pay the hourly rate and custodial fees at whatever the rate would be," said Susan H. Robertson, Punxsutawney Area School District business manager.
BROOKVILLE â October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Jefferson County, the county commissioners declared at their meeting on Tuesday.
Suella Himes, counselor advocate III with the Community Action Crossroads Project, appeared before the commission to speak about the issue of domestic abuse in Jefferson County.
âDomestic violence is really all about power and control,â she said. âYou have an individual who loves someone, but they just donât understand why this individual that they love is hurting them.â
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Years ago, The Punxsutawney Spirit decided to make a conscious effort to reach out to the community and thank it for all the faithfulness it had shown the paper. From that idea, The Spirit's Appreciation Day was born, and after many successful years, the tradition will carry on again this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SS.C.D. auditorium, just across the parking lot from The Spirit's office on Pine Street in Punxsutawney.
