PUNXSUTAWNEY â The plants that bring downtown Punxsutawney to life each summer â in the parking meter urns and planted barrels â can't take care of themselves. And this past summer, the Punxsutawney Garden Club entrusted the caretaking to its new, youngest member: 15-year-old Tommy Troutman.
And while Tommy is joined by his grandfather, Clarence "Butch" Troutman, on his Punxsutawney watering trips, he said it was from the other side of his family that his love for gardening was first sparked by his grandmother Debra Edgell.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â It happened again, as a neighbor thought she heard a beeping noise coming from a house at 302 Greenwood Ave. in Punxsutawney, saw smoke inside the structure and called 911.
With a quick response from the Punxsutawney Fire Department, the home was spared major damage.
"The owner, Scott Taylor, left at 3 p.m. and was working on an aquarium in what was the living room, and either a cigarette or equipment from the aquarium fell onto the couch and began to smolder," said Bryan Smith, Punxsutawney Fire Department chief.
BROOKVILLE â County commissioners Paul Corbin and Jeff Pisarcik signed a proclamation declaring September 2012 to be Senior Community Center Month at a meeting of the County Commission last Tuesday.
Fellow commissioner James McIntyre was absent for the signing
The proclamation read, âWe, Commissioners of the County of Jefferson, do hereby proclaim September 2012 as National Senior Community Center Month.
BROOKVILLE â The population in the Jefferson County prison system has been increasing recently, Warden Tom Elbel said at the latest meeting of the Jefferson County jail board last Monday.
âI donât have an explanation,â he said in regard to the cause of the sudden uptick.
He said that the jail has received a few inmates from other counties, but not as many as it has received in the past and still with a larger increase than has previously been recorded.
