PUNXSUTAWNEY â Thanks to the quick thinking of a passerby and a quick response from the Punxsutawney Fire Department, a garage fire on Rockland Avenue failed to spread to the owners' nearby house.
Central, Elk Run and Lindsey fire companies responded to a working garage fire at 1:56 p.m. Monday at 401 Rockland Ave. The property is owned by Jim and Janice Blose.
There were smoke and flames seen inside the garage when firefighters arrived on scene, said Bryan Smith, Punxsutawney Fire Department chief.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â Stipends for faculty members who are involved with special student projects and the amount they should be paid were discussed at a recent Punxsutawney Area School Board meeting.
Punxsutawney Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe said following the meeting that the stipend, which is a fixed sum paid periodically for services or to defray expenses, came about years ago when there was a play that was put on at Punxsutawney Area High School (PAHS), and then for multiple years it wasnât put on.
