Ex-Rusted Root drummer bringing rhythm, fun to Groundhog Day

GREENSBURG — Warm clothes and protection against the elements are necessary for attending Groundhog Day, but with former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan attending this year, guests may also want to bring a drum.

“We’re going to have a big-good time,” said Donovan, who will appear at Gobbler’s Knob early Thursday morning and with his band, Sun King Warriors, from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. tonight in the Celebration Tent in Barclay Square. The band’s performance is sponsored by S&T Bank.

Police prepare traffic, security for governor’s visit to Punxsy

PUNXSUTAWNEY —
This year’s observation of Groundhog Day will be marked for several reasons: Gov. Tom Corbett’s visit to the Weather Capital of the World; good weather, which could draw more guests today and tomorrow; and the fact that the annual celebration falls closer to the weekend.

Mulberry Square announced its 2012 Groundhog King and Queen Tuesday: Macklin Snyder (seated, left) was crowned the king, and Rose Goyette was crowned the queen. They were also heralded by “Phil’s Dancers,” the Inner Circle, and Mulberry administration. PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday, State Rep. Sam Smith (R-66) announced he will run for re-election to Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives this year.

“It is a privilege to serve the hardworking men, women and families of the 66th Legislative district in the state legislature,” Smith said.

Jury foreman speaks out about Rebert trial

BROOKVILLE — A Punxsutawney man who served as the jury foreman in the Steven Rebert double-homicide trial, which concluded late Friday, said the jury became deadlocked while deliberating whether or not Rebert should be put to death.

Rebert was sentenced to life in prison by Jefferson County President Judge John H. Foradora, after the jury could not come to a consensus as to whether or not he should be put to death in the murders of Wayne and Victoria Shugar, both 61, Brockway, who were found shot to death in their home April 12, 2010.

Punxsy native’s film scores big at Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah — After years of hard work, Punxsy native Chad Villella had the chance to experience every young filmmaker’s dream, as he was invited to attend the mecca of all independent film festivals, The Sundance Film Festival.

Villella was excited to premiere his horror film, “V/H/S,” at Sundance but also saw it as an opportunity.

“We want to enjoy the experience and also use it to get us to the next level creatively,” he said.
