PUNXSUTAWNEY — The weather conditions were nearly perfect for the
opening day of Pennsylvania Buck hunting season, in which 750,000 were expected to head into the woods throughout the state in pursuit of a trophy buck.
It was described as a decent turnout for the first day in southern Jefferson County, according to Andy Troutman, Wildlife Conservation officer (WCO) for southern Jefferson County. He said while making his rounds throughout the county, he checked four or five decent-sized bucks out in the field.
Each year, five women are chosen by the Punxsutawney Career Women’s Club for Career Women’s Week. The criteria used for choosing these women are based not only on their professional efforts, but also on the contributions they have made to community and family.
Firefighters from the Big Run Volunteer Fire Company responded to a report of smoke in a house at approximately 2:20 a.m. Monday at 806 Milliron Dr., Gaskill Township.
Firefighters arrived on scene and discovered the smoke was due to a failure of a component inside the furnace in the home owned by Barbara Milliron.
The furnace was turned off and could not be turned back on before being serviced. Big Run firefighters were assisted at the scene by members of the Central Fire Department and Jefferson County EMS.
