Plantation Bed & Breakfast’s new windmills provide a green energy source

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — The old legend has it that Don Quixote used to tilt at windmills, but today, there are many more people who are installing them for another reason — as an alternative energy source.

Such is the case at the Plantation Bed and Breakfast on Route 119 in Young Township.

"My son, Jesse Branken, came home from college in June, and he had suggested putting up windmills at Plantation Bed and Breakfast in order to save on electricity," said Julie Branken, owner of the popular bed and breakfast.

Downtown Mahoning and Findley Building receives facelift, including new elevator

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Things are looking up at the partially renovated Mahoning and Findley Street building in downtown Punxsutawney, as the installation of an elevator has been completed.

The building, owned by Bev Fairman recently received a facelift, with a new elevator being installed.

The third-floor offices were also redone, and a flashy sign spiced up the entryway, as well.

Crews respond to 2-car wreck near CMA

Shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday, members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle accident near the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church near Wal-Mart in Young Township.

Cold, slick road conditions lead to accidents

FROSTBURG — Numerous drivers throughout the tri-county area were either unaware or not prepared for their first drive under icy and snowy conditions on area roadways, which caused several accidents — some with injuries.

PAMS’ Kuntz rewarded for creative curriculum

Punxsutawney Area Middle School teacher Jeff Kuntz was recently rewarded for his creative curriculum “Geometry: Survival Style” by First Energy’s Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) grant program with a $500 grant.

Kuntz’s curriculum intends to add some fun to the education process, and the grant will be used to defer the cost of books and materials.

Hunters hit the woods on first day of buck season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The weather conditions were nearly perfect for the
opening day of Pennsylvania Buck hunting season, in which 750,000 were expected to head into the woods throughout the state in pursuit of a trophy buck.

It was described as a decent turnout for the first day in southern Jefferson County, according to Andy Troutman, Wildlife Conservation officer (WCO) for southern Jefferson County. He said while making his rounds throughout the county, he checked four or five decent-sized bucks out in the field.
