October 30th
Landon Neal and Leanne Zampini are kindergarten students in Judy Fetterman's kindergarten class at Jenks Hill Elementary School. The students are shown displaying the "Get Ready for Kindergarten" tote that will be given out at a program to be held Nov. 1 at Punxsutawney Area Middle School cafeteria.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — This Sunday, individuals with a passion for animals, a passion for running/walking — and especially those with passions for both — will have the opportunity to put their feet to the ground to help raise funds for and awareness of the Willow Run Sanctuary for Animals, owned by Margo Stefanic and Tommy Shaffer, in Coolspring.
The Fido 5K Walk/Run will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Rails to Trails course, beginning near Richard L. Kuntz Memorial Field.
Sunday evening, Reynoldsville held its trick-or-treat after a 5 p.m. parade. Trick-or-treat is scheduled to take place in Punxsutawney and many surrounding townships this evening.
Punxsutawney will hold the Halloween Parade at 6 p.m. (The parade will form at NAPA Auto Parts on Union Street at 5:30 p.m.), and trick-or-treat will follow until 9 p.m.;
October 29th
PUNXSUTAWNEY — In what has become an annual happening, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Ebensburg Unit and Community Action, Inc. are once again teaming up to put together this year’s Toys for Tots drive.

 FEMCO Machine Company became a partner in the campaign last year, and this year will be no different with FEMCO and Chambers Replacement World also assisting with the drive.
Trunk-or-Treat at the First Church of God will be held inside of the gym from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.
If school is closed that day, there will be no Trunk-or-Treat.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy mayor Jim Wehrle has declared a declaration of disaster emergency in the Borough of Punxsutawney effective Monday at 6 p.m. to enable staff and related officials to respond effectively to any possible impact of Hurricane Sandy in the borough.
The storm, which will begin to hit the mid-state area sometime Monday evening, is expected to bring heavy rain to the borough and region, resulting in low area flash-flooding and wind-related power outages, which could last for several days. Sustained high winds will likely contribute to tree damage around the borough as well.
The Punxsutawney Area School District has cancelled all classes for Tuesday, October 30 due to the forecasted weather.
Also cancelled are all sporting events for tonight, Monday, October 29 and tomorrow, Tuesday, October 30.
October 28th
A worker operates a machine Saturday afternoon at the intersection of State Route (SR) 119 at Hampton Avenue/Ridge Avenue/Clark Street.
The intersection closed at 6 p.m. Friday for the replacement of the railroad crossing.
PennDOT has said the intersection is expected to reopen at noon today.
Detours are posted throughout the borough and surrounding areas.
Both children and adults enjoyed the 4th annual East End Trick-or-Treat event Saturday night. Noella Hartzfeld (left), 9, dressed up as a “Dizzy Lizzy†monster, while Nakoma Hartzfeld, 12, donned an “80s Girl†costume.
Their mother, Linda Hartzfeld, said the girls opted to hand out candy at their Mahoning Street residence this year instead of going trick-or-treating, which she thought was a fine idea.
BROOKVILLE — Due to continued population issues, the Jefferson County Jail is presently uninterested in programs involving the housing of state inmates, Warden Tom Elbel said at its most recent meeting last Monday.
The matter was raised when District Attorney Jeff Burkett brought up an email that had been sent to members of the board
by County Commission Chairman Paul Corbin, who also sits on the Jail Inspection/Intermediate Punishment Board but was not present for that particular meeting.
