Numerous injuries reported in afternoon accident involving school van

A number of injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon in Punxsy between a Ford school van, operated by Ida Mae Uplinger of Brookville, and a Pontiac Grand Am, operated by Lakin Frampton of Punxsuatwney.

A total of seven juveniles and both drivers were transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Punxsy Borough announces leaf collection schedule

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Borough's annual fall leaf collection program will begin on Monday and continue through November.

The schedule will be as follows:

• Monday: East End

• Tuesday: Elk Run and Park Avenue Area

• Wednesday: Middletown and Findley to Center Street

• Thursday: Church Street and Indiana Street

• Friday: West End and South Side

Changes to this schedule could occur due to weather and/or the amount of leaves that need to be picked up.

Leaves should be raked to the curb next to the road, but not raked onto the roadway.

TRAVEL ADVISORY: Route 119 at Hampton/Ridge/Clark to close Oct. 26 - 29.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — State Route (SR) 119 at Hampton Avenue/Ridge Avenue/Clark Street will close in Punxsutawney to replace the railroad crossing.

The intersection will close on Friday, Oct. 26, at 6 pm, and is expected to reopen at noon on Monday, Oct. 29.

The railroad crossing replacement is part of the Elk Run Bridge Replacement and SR 119/310 intersection widening project in Jefferson County.

This $3,351,119 bridge replacement and roadway construction project is being completed by Francis J. Palo, Inc., of Clarion.

Donaldson charged with stealing from Brookville Cheerleaders Booster Club

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Borough Police Department has reported that it has charged Shelly C. Donaldson with theft by unlawful taking, forgery and other related charges following an investigation stemming back to August.

It is alleged that Donaldson stole over $12,000 from the Brookville Cheerleaders Booster Club.

Donaldson was arraigned in front of District Judge Greg Bazylak and released on $25,000 unsecured bail.

Crosstown Ministries invites kids of all ages to ‘Fall for Jesus'

PUNXSUTAWNEY — You can "Fall for Jesus" this weekend as Crosstown Ministries — a collaboration of Grace United Methodist Church and Woodland Avenue United Methodist Church — will hold a Vacation Bible School (VBS) reunion Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Young Township just below the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

"There will be classes, songs, snacks and crafts for the whole family, ages nursery through adult," said Shelly Bishop, education chair for Grace United Methodist Church.

Punxsutawney Area Hospital: We never used medicine targeted as source of meningitis outbreak

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In response to the escalating number of inquiries about the tainted spine steroid shot related to a deadly national outbreak of meningitis, practitioners at Punxsutawney Area Hospital (PAH) want to reassure patients that PAH’s supply of steroids was not involved.

“Punxsutawney Area Hospital does not currently (have), nor have we ever had, any medication in our facility that was produced by NECC, the compounding pharmacy which shipped the vials of the potentially contaminated product,” said Tom Moore, R.Ph., Director of Pharmacy Services.

Highlights from the new Big Run Burn Ordinance No. 220

BIG RUN - Big Run Borough Council passed a burn ordinance Monday in a 4-1 vote.

Here's the details:

The ordinance applies to all outdoor burning and open burning within the Borough of Big Run.

It does not apply to burning for the purpose of generating heat in a stove, furnace, fireplace or other heating device within a building used for human or animal habitation.

It also does not apply to the use of propane, acetylene, natural gas, gasoline or kerosene in a device intended for heating, construction or maintenance activities.

Lions Club seeks clearer vision with upcoming White Cane campaign

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you're driving around town Saturday and come upon a group of men who are in the road holding huge white canes, be advised it's the Punxsutawney Lions Club's annual "White Cane Day" collection.

"'White Cane Day' is an annual event that the Punxsy Lions Club has held for a number of years," said Mike Ruffner, president of the Punxsutawney Lions Club.

Joe Sikora Sr., Lions Club member, said there are quite a few people who can't afford to purchase eyeglasses, and the Lions Club offers the program to assist those individuals.

Sandy Mottern, a member of the office staff at Mike's BiLo Market in Reynoldsville, reminds area residents that there is still time to make a generous donation of health and beauty aids, hygiene supplies, snack items and other gifts to be sent to American soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

The annual Support the Troops drive, sponsored by the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) is hoping for an outpouring of contributions to ship overseas to brighten the Christmas holiday season.
