MOON TOWNSHIP â You can call him THE Rick Weiss â thanks to his wife, Debe â but it might embarrass him a little bit.
Weiss, the man behind hundreds of Punxsutawney Phil cartoons, posters, postcards, banners and the model of the âPhantastic Phil!â statues in town, recalled visiting an art show during the Groundhog Festival a number of years ago, when he and his wife began talking with a person at the show.
âWe introduced ourselves, and my wife said, âHeâs the one who does the groundhog artwork,ââ he recalled. âThe person said, âAre you THE Rick Weiss?â Iâve never lived that down.â
BROOKVILLE â From the time the child abuse allegations against former Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky were revealed Nov. 5, prompting his arrest, Jefferson Countyâs director of Children & Youth Services, Brian Mowrey, has seen a spike in the number of reported child abuse cases.
According to Mowrey, in the last two months, there has been an increase in referrals to the office of Children & Youth Services â some of the highest numbers heâs ever seen.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Representatives from PennDOT District 10 presented plans for work on Margiotti Bridge this summer during a public event Thursday at the Mahoning East Civic Complex.
According to John McCombie, senior civil engineer supervisor-transportation for PennDOT, the scope of the project entails retrofitting certain parts of the barriers on the 75-year-old bridge that spans Mahoning Creek, Water Street and part of the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad.
