National Guard offering free programs for schools

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you are looking to climb higher, you might want to talk with the Army National Guard, which offers a free outreach program in area schools.

SSG Michael Barnett, Army National Guard recruiter, said schools can take advantage of a variety of free activities and programs.

“We offer these at no charge,” he said, adding that recruiters offer free programs on drug prevention, Prom Promise, history of the National Guard, flag ceremonies and other informational classes.

“All of the recruiters are trained to speak on each of these classes and programs,” Barnett said.

Bosak retires from fire department as first woman life member

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Mary Ann Bosak was a woman firefighter when there was no such thing as a woman firefighter in the Punxsutawney Fire Department.

Recently, Punxsutawney Borough Council voted to place Bosak on the life membership list with the Station 20/Central and Punxsutawney Fire Departments after 20 years of being an active member. After all, she grew up at the fire hall with a family of firefighters including her father, the late J. Don Bosak, former chief of Central.
