PUNXSUTAWNEY â After nearly seven years in the planning, a groundbreaking ceremony for the Area Transportation Authorityâs (ATA) Punxsutawney Transit Center building was held Friday.
âI think that a lot of people â and certainly the board members of ATA â didnât think this was going to happen,â David Gordon, chairman of the ATA Board of Directors, said.
Punxsy is the first of seven transit centers set for construction, and Gordon said he hopes the others go a little easier than this one did.

The Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company took possession of its new 2011 Ferrara engine/pumper Thursday. The vehicle possesses a 1,500-gallon pump for 1,000 gallons of water, as well as a 30-gallon compressed air foam system. If the weather works out, you could see the new truck during âTouch the Truckâ as part of Saturdayâs âPizza & Preventionâ downtown.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â A Pittsburgh man accused of shooting two Punxsy men last week had his bail set at $2 million during his arraignment Thursday, just hours after he was apprehended in the Pittsburgh area.
Christopher L. Thornhill, 24, faces two counts each of attempted criminal homicide; aggravated assault; recklessly endangering another person; and weapons violations stemming from the Sept. 22 incident near a residence along Cranberry Alley.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Having learned that the need is greater than ever among American forces stationed in Afghanistan, members of the Jefferson County chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) will conduct their third county-wide âSupport the Troopsâ campaign.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Torrence Street traffic light project was given a green light â literally â Wednesday, as the new traffic signals were put into service by sub-contractor Perram Electric of Ohio.
Roger Steele, chairman of Punxsutawney Borough Councilâs Public Works Committee, said through the project, council is exploring a way to decrease the traffic flow on Mahoning Street, with the widening of Torrence Street as part of a PennDOT traffic study.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â For the 10th straight year, Scott Anthony, owner of Foxâs Pizza Den in Punxsutawney, is sponsoring âPizza and Preventionâ from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
During Pizza and Prevention, Foxâs is offering a Big Daddy Pepperoni Pizza for only $9.11.
Along with the fund-raiser, âTouch the Truckâ is back again this year with a twist, as the new $322,000 Elk Run fire engine â financed by the borough â will be delivered to the department today and on display Saturday with other Punxsutawney Fire Department equipment along South Findley Street.

BROOKVILLE â The post-conviction appeal hearing for Robert G. Rega of Punxsutawney resumed Tuesday at the Jefferson County Courthouse, when Regaâs attorneys requested a continuance on his contention that he would have been entitled to some type of legal assistance from the Italian consulate in Philadelphia because heâs an Italian national.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Sept. 8, the PAHS senior class chose six senior girls to represent the 2011 Homecoming Queenâs Court.
This yearâs court includes Cenneca Dilts, Brooke Doney, Adrienne Hess, Alexandria Magill, Keaton Mohney, and Alissa Vite.
The senior girl with the highest number of votes will reign as queen, and the senior girl with the second highest number of votes will reign as princess, after the official crowning during halftime of Fridayâs homecoming football game against Karns City.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Career Womenâs Club named Colleen Means as its Career Woman of the Year during a dinner Tuesday evening.
Means, who teaches fifth-grade reading and language arts at Punxsutawney Area Middle School, has been a teacher for the past 28 years.
She is also the co-chairperson of the clubâs Girl of the Month Committee.
Also, for the past 20 years, Means has been in charge of the groupâs annual Teddy Bear Picnic, which is held as part of the Groundhog Festival.
Means said she was very surprised to receive the award, and she is very thankful.
