Fla. man returns long-lost class ring to Punxsy grad

June 15, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tom Poore was convinced that the 1944 Punxsutawney High School class ring that his father found near West Palm Beach, Fla., in the early 1970s belonged to Blair Richards.

The only person who wasn’t convinced that the ring was his, was Blair Richards.

“I thought it was a scam,” Richards said Wednesday evening, just a few hours after Poore drove all the way from Roseland, Fla., to return the ring to him. “He called me a year ago, and I didn’t believe him.”

June 15, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council discussed the proposed Sawmill Run bridge replacement Monday, with a consensus that closing areas of West Mahoning Street completely for three months was a better option than dealing with 10 temporary traffic signals for nine months.

Public Works Chairman Roger Steele said the bridge replacement will take place during the 2012 construction season.

With new spaces for youngsters, library kicks off summer reading event

June 15, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With a newly-renovated children’s section, the Punxsutawney Memorial Library is ready to begin its summer reading program this week.

Through the efforts of Director Coral Ellshoff, new furniture has replaced disintegrating items that had been used in the library since the early 1970s.

“The older furniture was original to the library when it was built in 1974,” she said. “It had served us really well, but it had started to show its age because this is a really well-used area of the library.”
