Man sent to hospital after crash into tree

NORTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP — A one-vehicle accident sent a Punxsutawney man to the hospital after his vehicle struck a tree at 2 p.m. Monday on Route 119, North Mahoning Township.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, a 2010 Lincoln Town Car driven by Charles G. Rumpf, 68, Punxsutawney, was traveling north on Route 119 near Midway Stables when he fell asleep and his vehicle traveled off the roadway.

Police said Rumpf's vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Local groups team up to help twister victims in Missouri

BROOKVILLE — At least 125 people died in Joplin, Mo., when a mile-long tornado struck last Sunday, leaving in its path complete devastation.
But amid tragedy, there is hope.

In conjunction with Clarion County Career Center and Charlie Schrecengost Trucking (CST), the Jefferson County Firemen’s Association will gather goods to send to tornado victims.

Memorial Day Services

PUNXSUTAWNEY
• A Memorial Day parade and service, sponsored by American Legion Post 62 and VFW Post 2076, will be conducted Monday.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. with services following at Barclay Square bandstand at 11 a.m.
The veterans’ memorial wreath will be placed at Circle Hill Cemetery immediately following the service. The public’s participation and attendance will be greatly appreciated.

BIG RUN
• VFW Post 9044 and Ladies’ Auxiliary, Big Run, will hold a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Fairview Cemetery, Church Street.

PAHS welcomes Air Force sergeant as speaker for graduation

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School District will hold commencement exercises for the Class of 2011 at 7 p.m. Tuesday at a location — Jack LaMarca Memorial Field or the PAHS auditorium, in the event of inclement weather — to be determined.

The guest speaker will be Senior Master Sergeant Charles Buterbaugh, a 1991 PAHS graduate.

The first project of three is nearly complete with the demolition of this house Monday, located at the corner of Route 310 (Elk Run Avenue) and Route 119 (Ridge Avenue). According to PennDOT, the property was purchased from Brian Horner, who was using the former store and house to store tires. The demolition of the structure is a sight and distance improvement project, which is a portion of two other projects: The replacement of the bridge on Route 119 that travels over Elk Run Creek, and a third project which involves construction of a turning lane at the intersection.

May is Older Americans Month in county

BROOKVILLE — Tuesday, the Jefferson County Commissioners proclaimed the month of May as Older Americans Month.

More than 4,000 people aged 60 and older live in Jefferson County, and this proclamation is designed to recognize their involvement in the lives of the county’s residents.

Mikki Oakes, director of the Area Agency on Aging’s Development and Community Relations, thanked the commissioners for their efforts in connecting to the community.

“We appreciate the commissioners’ support of our seniors here in Jefferson County,” she said.

District eyes hiking lunch prices

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Like everything else, the price of lunch will probably rise once again in all cafeterias in the Punxsutawney Area School District due to federal guidelines.

Lesa Conner, board member and chairperson for the cafeteria committee, said at Wednesday’s board committee meeting that the board is looking at raising the price of school lunches by $0.05 for the 2011-12 school year.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During the final week that the Punxsutawney Area High School Class of 2011 was able to share together, seniors not only shared memories of character, but also memories of scholarship as they came together as a whole for Class Night.

Class Secretary Marcy Sallack opened the program by saying the night would celebrate individual and group achievements of the class.

Principal David London expressed his wishes for the class as it enters the world. He also congratulated seniors on being May 2011 graduates.
