PUNXSUTAWNEY â With all the budget cuts predicted from the state education budget, the Punxsutawney Area School District is proposing $2.7 million in cuts for its 2011-12 budget.
The Punxsy district, along with other districts in Pennsylvania, are having to create budgets that deal with a large number of cuts from the state as proposed by Gov. Tom Corbett.
Wednesday, Business Administrator Susan H. Robertson told the school board that the proposed 2011-12 expenses are $38,713,742, a decrease of $2,739,013, which represents a 6.61-percent decrease over last yearâs budget.
REYNOLDSVILLE â Democratic candidates hoping for party nominations to local office in the May 17 primary met Wednesday at the Bellamauro Social Hall in Reynoldsville.
Those speaking included candidates for county commission, magisterial district justice and county auditor.
Jefferson County Democratic Party Chairman Don Hilliard introduced the candidates, and thanked them for running. He also urged voters to turn out for the local elections.
County Commission
The candidates for county commission vacancies include incumbent Jeffrey Pisarcik and challengers Tom Swab and Pat McFall.
SYKESVILLE â Police say âno criminal violations were notedâ following the discovery of a human fetus in a Mason jar at an apartment in Sykesville.
Tuesday, DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police said troopers were dispatched to a West Main Street apartment at 9:50 p.m. Saturday pertaining to a complaint from a landlord about a dog left without care in the apartment by tenants.
While a caretaker checked the conditions of the apartment, a Mason jar containing a human fetus was found inside the apartment, on top of a television, state police said.
