OLIVER TOWNSHIP â A huge windstorm that caused damage to property, trees and electric lines in Oliver and Ringgold townships was determined to not be a tornado, according to Jefferson County Emergency Services.
A severe storm passed through Jefferson County at 2:57 p.m. Monday, causing minor home damage, and downing numerous trees and power lines in Oliver and Ringgold townships.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the county around 2:15 p.m., which was upgraded to a tornado warning about 25 minutes later.
ROSEVILLE and WASHINGTON â The Jefferson-Clarion-Clearfield County Farmers Union met recently at the Roseville Grange. Members primarily discussed high costs of production and the pending farm bill.
Larry Breech, president of the Pennsylvania Farmers Union, and Shannon Schaffer, director of membership for the National Farmers Union, encouraged union members to get involved as Congress begins to construct the farm bill that will take effect in 2012.
âHe who cries out the loudest is the one who gets heard,â Breech said. âEverybody needs to stay active. Now is the time to get involved.â
COOLSPRING â Jefferson County 911 dispatched the Oliver Township Fire Company to its station around 3:05 p.m. Monday for possible tornado activity in the area.
The 911 center said lines and trees were down in the area of St. John's Road. Reports said a tornado did indeed touch down, although there were no reports from the 911 center confirming it.
Other reports said a tornado had also touched down near New Bethlehem prior to the call in Oliver Township. Those reports were also unconfirmed.
