PUNXSUTAWNEY — Not so fast in declaring the Punxsutawney Area Transportation Authority (ATA) terminal project on North Findley Street a dead issue.
During Monday’s Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting, Borough Manager Ben White said the bids that were due March 22 to construct a terminal on North Findley Street came in higher than ATA had planned to spend on the project.
Demolition began Wednesday on the former Parente’s Recreation along North Gilpin Street and a two-story, wood-framed house located next door. Both structures were razed to make way for Grace Place, a 24-unit housing complex for moderate-income seniors. The $6.5 million project is being constructed by the Jefferson Area Lutheran Social Ministry and Trek Development at the corner of Pine and Gilpin streets. PUNXSUTAWNEY — Bruce Chambers is a posthumous inductee into the Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame.
Chambers, a 1969 graduate of PAHS, was an All-State football player, playing linebacker and fullback. He lettered his sophomore, junior and senior years. He also lettered in track, throwing the discus and shot put. He also played basketball and other sports.
He was a Zeedick Cup award winner and obtained a scholarship to Virginia Military Institute. He earned a degree in civil engineering.
