HARRISBURG â As youâve been hearing for the last several weeks, Monday marks the opening day of the two-week general deer hunting season.
Jerry Feaser, public information officer for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, reported that nearly 750,000 hunting enthusiasts sporting fluorescent orange and camouflage clothing will be hitting the woods at sunrise to try and harvest a trophy buck.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â To make the best betterâ has been the motto of the 4-H Club for the past 100 years.
And making the best better is just what Jefferson County 4-H volunteer leaders Lois Pifer and Diane âDollyâ Smouse have been doing for 40 of those 100 years.
The âlearn by doing,â life-skills program engages area youth members, ages five to 19, in carrying out the mission of the clubâs founding four Hâs: Head, hands, heart and health.
BROOKVILLE â The Jefferson County Commissioners Wedn-esday advertised the prop-osed budget for the 2011 fiscal year, and there will be no inc-rease on property taxes.
The property tax rate will remain at 10.75 mills of assessed property value.
County finance officer Deborah Gillung said it was âkind of a surpriseâ that a tax increase was not needed. This is the second consecutive year that the commissioners did not have to raise taxes.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Punxsutawney Borough Police was chosen again this year for the American Automobile Association (AAA) gold award.
Police Chief Tom Fedigan said the award was presented by the AAA Traffic Safety Awards program.
âThis is our third consecutive year for being recognized,â he said. The award is for implementing programs and projects that demonstrate the departmentâs endeavor to improve local traffic safety issues.
Fedigan said there are four standards for awards.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â Everyone has much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, but two families in particular are thankful to have their lives, thanks to a four-year-old boy.
Four-year-old Kolton Renegade Powers and his family used to live in a duplex along Graffius Avenue until a fire destroyed their home Nov. 2. Neighbors Jim, Peggy and Elizabeth Trayer lived on the other side.
SYKESVILLE â The Sykesville Lions Club was gearing up for its 57th-annual Pancake Fry Tuesday. The fry will start Friday, and run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets to the event, which is held at Town Hall in Sykesville, are available in advance and at the door. Customers receive a breakfast of pancakes and sausage, and the crowd of many hunters readying for deer season exchange outdoor stories over coffee.
BROOKVILLE â Miss Pennsylvania 2010, Courtney Thomas, graced her Hickory Grove Elementary alma mater with a visit last Friday, leaving students with the message, âDonât COPP out.â
The acronym stands for the 22-year-old Sigel nativeâs personal platform on the consequences of peer pressure (COPP).
While an eighth-grader at Brookville Junior-Senior High School, Thomas said she experienced the serious repercussions of falling to peer pressure first hand. The 2007 graduate decided to leave a high school football game, against her better judgment, to join friends for a car ride.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â The holiday season is upon Punxsutawney, and Barclay Squareâs circle of patiently waiting pines is proof that Christmas is just around the corner.
This year will mark the Rotary Clubâs fourth-annual Circle of Trees project. Placed Veteransâ Day weekend, 19 artificial trees surround Memorial Bandstand in Barclay Square, ready to be decorated by local non-profit groups and scheduled for illumination on âLight Up Nightâ Saturday.
Jefferson Countyâs three participants in the NFLâs Punt, Pass & Kick event â (from left) Abby Jo Northey of Brookville, Laney Monroe of Punxsutawney and Blaise Carney of Reynoldsville â took part in the contest at the Steelersâ training facility on the South Side and then took the field at halftime during the Steelers versus Raiders game Sunday at Heinz Field. Abby Jo took second in the 10-and-11-year-old girlsâ division, while Laney took third in the eight-and-nine-year-old girlsâ division. Blaiseâs placement in the eight-and-nine-year-old boysâ division was unavailable.
