Commission: No new hearing

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Former Punxsutawney Borough Police Officer Sean Weaver was turned down Friday for a hearing by the Punxsutawney Civil Service Commission in a continued attempt to get his job back.

Commission Solicitor Jeff Lundy, who was not available for Monday’s meeting, filed his opinion on two issues: As to whether Weaver would be granted a hearing by the commission, and a request by Timothy Morris, Punxsutawney Borough Council solicitor, regarding the candidate eligibility list.

Community Center eyes Raffle Night, Pepsi event to aid in improvements

PUNXSUTAWNEY —The Punxsutawney Area Community Center will host its second-annual Raffle Night tonight.

From 6 to 9 p.m., at the Pantall Hotel’s Rooftop, ticket holders are invited to join the festivities as the center raffles away an array of awards.

Guests will be entered into the drawings of numerous winnings, including a 42-inch HD TV; bedroom suite; sofa and chair set; vacuum cleaner; and several cash prizes, said Mick Mumau, president of the center’s Board of Directors.

Tickets may be purchased at the door tonight.

CRW Home Center comes a long way from humble beginnings

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Twenty-one years ago, the current CRW Home Center established itself as a small showroom tucked away along Mulberry Alley.

Fast-forward to 2010, when CRW now stretches out in a 35,000-square foot facility with 19 full- and part-time employees, and owners Tim and Cindy Chambers and their store have been named the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Small Business of the Year.

“A little birdie had said I better make sure I go” to the annual Chamber banquet Thursday at the Punxsutawney Country Club, Tim Chambers said. “I thought, ‘OK, now I know why.’”

School district eyes taking part in NFL wellness program

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Students who attend PAMS and PAHS could have the opportunity to kick off a program that helps them not only get into better physical condition, but to learn to eat better, as well.

PAMS Assistant Principal Michael Guidice recently told the Punxsutawney Area School Board that the National Dairy Council (NDC) and National Football League (NFL) are helping schools across the country score big with Fuel Up to Play 60, a program to tackle childhood obesity by giving young people a voice in changing the school nutrition and physical activity environment.

BREAKING NEWS: West Shamokin forfeits Friday football game due to lack of players

PUNXSUTAWNEY — According to PAHS Principal David London, West Shamokin has forfeited its football game — scheduled for Friday in Rural Valley — against the Punxsy Chucks due to lack of players.

London said Thursday afternoon, West Shamokin Athletic Director Tom McClain notified him and Punxsy Athletic Director John Knopick that the Wolves are unable to field enough eligible players for the game.

London said the forfeit moves Punxsy's record to 10-0, and playoff points will be awarded to Punxsy for the win.

Leaf collection runs until Nov. 12 in Punxsy borough

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Haven’t raked your leaves for collection yet? That’s OK; borough residents have until next Friday, when the collection ends.

Roger Steele, chairman of the Public Works Committee, announced at Tuesday’s meeting that the collection continues on schedule at this time, and Borough Manager Ben White said crews hope to have all leaves collected by Friday, Nov. 12.

“Those frosty nights we’ve been experiencing knocked most of the leaves onto the ground this past week,” White said.

If she’s riding for any cause, it’s to encourage people to follow their dreams.

Party chairmen react to elections

BROOKVILLE — Republican candidates did very well in Jefferson County, collectively gaining more than 70 percent of the vote.

One U.S. Senate seat and five U.S. House of Repre-sentative seats from Penns-ylvania switched from Democrat to Repub-lican, and every Republican candidate — Pat Toomey, Tom Corbett, Glenn Thompson and Sam Smith — carried Jefferson County.

Elk Run chief: Residents ‘lucky to be alive’ after fire

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A duplex along Graffius Avenue that was the home to 14 people sustained severe damage from a fire that erupted around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday.
The house located at 210 1/2 and 211 Graffius Ave. and owned by Richard Shaffer of Rossiter was fully involved when the alarm was turned in by Central Fire Department Chief Scott Depp, who was helping with borough leaf collection not far from the scene.
According to Punxsutawney Elk Run Fire Chief Bryan Smith, the two-story wood frame structure was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

Jefferson County voters remain faithful to Republican candidates

BROOKVILLE — Voters strongly supported Republican incumbents and a newcomer for a long-time Democratic U.S. Senate seat in Tuesday’s general election, and opted to close Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell’s eight years in Harrisburg by selecting a Republican candidate to fill his shoes in January.

Jefferson County voters strongly supported Republican Tom Corbett’s gubernatorial bid, as he collected 9,484 votes (or 74 percent) over Democratic Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, who had 3,258 votes (26 percent).
