November 22, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The holiday season is upon Punxsutawney, and Barclay Square’s circle of patiently waiting pines is proof that Christmas is just around the corner.

This year will mark the Rotary Club’s fourth-annual Circle of Trees project. Placed Veterans’ Day weekend, 19 artificial trees surround Memorial Bandstand in Barclay Square, ready to be decorated by local non-profit groups and scheduled for illumination on “Light Up Night” Saturday.

Jefferson County’s three participants in the NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick event — (from left) Abby Jo Northey of Brookville, Laney Monroe of Punxsutawney and Blaise Carney of Reynoldsville — took part in the contest at the Steelers’ training facility on the South Side and then took the field at halftime during the Steelers versus Raiders game Sunday at Heinz Field. Abby Jo took second in the 10-and-11-year-old girls’ division, while Laney took third in the eight-and-nine-year-old girls’ division. Blaise’s placement in the eight-and-nine-year-old boys’ division was unavailable.
