Arch Serian, 89

July 4, 2014

Arch Serian, 89, of Rossiter, died Thursday, July 3, 2014,
in Punxsutawney.

He was born April 23, 1925, a son of the late Arch and Jennie (Senott) Serian.

Mr. Serian was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served during World War II.

In May of 1951, he married the former Phyllis G. Altman. She survives and resides in Rossiter.

He worked as a foreman at Loree Footwear until it closed.

Arch was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, and he devoted many years of service to maintaining the church, the grounds and the cemetery.

Bonnie L. Minick, 66

July 4, 2014

Bonnie L. Minick, 66, Ringgold, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born May 2, 1948, a daughter of the late Lennie and Hazel (Reed) Himes.

On Aug. 23, 1980, she married Dale E. Minick, who survives.

She enjoyed making plastic canvases, crocheting, planting flowers, gardening and bowling.

She worked for Brookville Glove for 32 years as a sewer.

Minor League Softball All-Stars beat Fox Township, 11-1

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After their defeat to DuBois on Monday night, the Punxsy Minor League Softball All-Stars were in desperate need of a win in order to stay alive in their All-Star tournament.
Apparently, they were well aware of the dire consequences riding on this game, because they took no chances when they faced off against Fox Township on Wednesday night, whom they beat 11-1 in four innings of play.

Spirit offices closed for Fourth of July holiday

The Spirit’s offices will close at 5 p.m. Thursday and will remain closed for the Fourth of July holiday on Friday.

There will be no paper printed or delivered for Friday.

PAH celebrates important occasion with ceremonial mortgage burning party

On Wednesday, Punxsutawney Area Hospital (PAH) held a mortgage burning celebration in honor of making the final payments for the building, which was built in the 1970s, and for the 1999 addition to the hospital.

Pictured here is PAH CEO Daniel D. Blough Jr. placing a copy of the mortgage into the fire.

The hospital also took the opportunity to recognize “original employees,” many of whom are pictured above, who have been at the building since its opening.

Work Begins Next Week on a Resurfacing and Bridge Repair Project on Route 36 in Jefferson County

Indiana — Work begins next week on a resurfacing and bridge repair project on Route 36 from the top of Chango Hill to the intersection with Route 119 in Punxsutawney Borough and Bell Township in Jefferson County.

Daytime, single-lane restrictions controlled by flaggers will be in place on Route 36 to perform roadwork including milling, paving and drainage.

Nighttime work will be performed on the bridge on Route 36 at the Route 119 intersection.

Punxsy Major League Baseball All-Stars beat DuBois 7-5

If you mention DuBois around a Punxsy All-Star parent, chances are you'll notice a vein or two pop out of their neck as a rivalry fueled rage builds up inside of them. DuBois has defeated one All-Star team, and knocked out another thus far in an otherwise successful Punxsy All-Star season. They've been the thorn in Punxsy's side, the rain on their parade and the dirty band-aid in their ice-cream.

New Individuals bring an old-fashioned feel to festival; Wednesday's schedule

Tuesday night, the activity in Barclay Square was sponsored by FEMCO Machine, and that activity included a group called the New Individuals bringing an old-fashioned feel to the Groundhog Festival with their oldies performance.

The Punxsutawney Garden Club's Garden of the Month for June belongs to Jim "Tibby" and Kathy Divelbiss, who reside at 403 North Penn St. in Punxsy.
