Going back in time: Historical Society hosts Spirit Walk in Barclay Square

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area Historical and Genealogical Society, along with the Punxsutawney Memorial Library, hosted a Spirit Walk on Tuesday evening. Tour groups were led on a moonlit walk back in time to Barclay Square through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Punxsutawney was much different.

Donna Belle (Smith) Newcome, 77

October 27, 2014

Donna Belle (Smith) Newcome, 77, of Punxsutawney, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. For the past year, she had been a resident of Christ the King Manor in DuBois.

She and her twin brother, Donald, were born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1936, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Walter and Nora E. (Furman) Smith.

Donna Belle was a 1954 graduate of Punxsutawney High School.

On Sept. 8, 1962, she married Ronald Newcome, Jr. He preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 2012. They enjoyed nearly fifty years of marriage together.

Karns City too much for Punxsy JVs

Punxsy's JV football team had a rough night Monday against Karns City, as the Gremlins coasted to a 41-0 victory.

Punxsy's Jacob Weaver, pictured above, was able to break a few big runs and ended up with almost 50 on the night.

Punxsy's schedule slows down this week, but tonight is highlighted by the volleyball team's opening-round match against Karns City. The Lady Chucks are the top seed, while the Gremlins are the No. 4 seed. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. in Punxsy.

Lonnie Prescher, 48

Lonnie Prescher, 48, Stump Creek, passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, after a lengthy illness. Born March 11, 1966, in Bedford, Pa., he was the son of Haddie Carol Prescher Tipping, who survives in Ohio.

Lonnie is also survived by his longtime girlfriend, Sammie Botelho of Stump Creek; three children, Billie Jo, Shawn and Tonya Kniseley, all of Reynoldsville; three grandchildren, Hayley Kniseley, Tye and Kiera LaBorde; two brothers, Bert and Brock Tipping, both of Ohio; three sisters, Renee Roper and Bridget and Erica Tipping, all of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen Martha Lyons, 99

Helen Martha Lyons, 99, of Punxsutawney, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at home.

She was born in 1915 in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Fred S. and Zula (Stiver) Heitzenrater.

On March 31, 1937, she married Harry J. Lyons, who preceded her in death on Nov. 10, 1988.

She was a member of the First Church of God of Punxsutawney.

Helen was a seamstress and specialized in drapery making.

She enjoyed reading the paper and keeping up with current events, crocheting, painting, reading, crafts and her dog, Benji. She was also a vendor at the Hazen Flea Market for more than 40 years.

Josephine “Joe” Marie Turner, 84

Josephine “Joe” Marie Turner, 84, Falls Creek, passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois, after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 1, 1930, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late James T. and Elizabeth (Reed) Strano. She was married to Irvin C. Turner, who preceded her in death.

Donna B. Newcome, 77, of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at Christ the King Manor.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

Turnovers haunt Chucks in loss to Gremlins

October 24, 2014

On Friday, the Chucks fell to the undefeated Karns City Gremlins 43-16. Turnovers were a problem for Punxsy, as the Chucks gave Karns City the ball four times.

Next week, the Chucks will play a rare Saturday game at DuBois when they take on the Clearfield Bison for the District IX AAA crown. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
