Indiana DPW director: Snow can be ‘budget buster’

INDIANA — The Borough of Punxsutawney isn't the only municipality that struggles with downtown snow removal.

The director of Public Works for the Borough of Indiana, Dave Fairman, said the borough typically doesn't remove snow from the downtown district on a regular basis.

Due to a snow emergency last winter, Indiana's eight-man Public Works crew did remove snow from the downtown district with the assistance from sub-contractors and a large snow blower from PennDOT.

Kathryn L. Mills, 92

Kathryn L. Mills, 92, Punxsutawney (Fairview), died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at Laurelbrooke Landing, Brookville.

She was born Feb. 4, 1919, in Tylersburg, a daughter of the late Frank and Ruth Fraizer.

Aug. 8, 1936, she married James Robert Mills, who preceded her in death Sept. 4, 1993.

Mrs. Mills was a former employee of Loree Footwear, Grant’s and worked at the family fruit stand.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and enjoyed playing the piano and listening to people sing.

Responders rush to vehicle accident with entrapment

OLIVER TOWNSHIP — Both drivers and a passenger were injured following a two-vehicle accident that occurred around 5:41 p.m. on Route 36 just north of Aber Road Monday in Oliver Township.
According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, the accident occurred when a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Justin T. August, 22, slid on the snow-covered roadway and crossed over into the southbound lane where it struck head on a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Mickey I. Harris, which was traveling in the southbound lane.

Visitors flock to Groundhog Club Web site

PUNXSUTAWNEY —

The physical crowd may have appeared a bit smaller for Groundhog Day this year, but millions of people elsewhere logged on to the Groundhog Club's Web site — Groundhog.org — to check out Punxsy Phil and happenings around town.

Jeff Grube, the Inner Circle's "Sky Painter" who monitors the site's activity, said the site has about 900,000 individuals visitors, as well as 2.5 million page views. During only Feb. 1 and 2, the hits numbered 895,000.

"We saw a big increase," he said. "We've seen double about every year on the Web site."

Mistakes lead to Punxsy's 41-24 defeat

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' basketball team had more turnovers than points during a 41-24 loss to Elk County Catholic Monday night in the second game between the two teams in four days.

Punxsy (4-13, 1-6 District IX League) committed 30 turnovers, which led to the Lady Chucks scoring an average of six points per quarter. The Lady Crusaders (15-4, 5-2) turned all the miscues into points on Punxsy's end, as they handed the Lady Chucks their second loss in four days after beating Punxsy Friday in St. Marys by a similar score, 38-24.

Raiders lose wrestling championship

DUBOIS— The District IX Class AA Team Championship wrestling tournament Saturday at DuBois High School didn't end how top seeded Brookville pictured it would before the season started.

The Raiders had to stand and watch, as another team celebrated being champions.

Brookville lost to second seeded Ridgway 32-29 in the championship match, a team the Raiders beat 42-24 Jan. 29.

Brookville coach Dave Klepfer was disappointed that his team hadn't accomplished one of their biggest goals.

Elmer L. Hughes, 88

February 7, 2011

Elmer L. Hughes, 88, Westover, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Clearfield Hospital.
 
Mr. Hughes was born Sept. 5, 1922. in La Jose, a son of the late Bert J. Hughes and Willimina (Young) Hughes.
 
He married Beverly June (Cullen) Hughes, May 12, 1951, who survives.

He was a member of the East Ridge United Methodist Church, the Harmony Grange # 1201, Coalport Lodge # 574 and F.A.M. 33rd Degree.

Martha Irene (Zimmerman) Rehar, 78

Martha Irene (Zimmerman) Rehar, 78, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

Mrs. Zimmerman was born May 3, 1932, in Henderson Township, a daughter of Walter and Ada (Weber) Zimmerman, who preceded her in death.

Feb. 16,1963, she married Luttie W. Rehar, who survives.

Mrs. Rehar was a graduate of Big Run High School, class of 1950. She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish and the Rosary Society in Sykesville.
