Trisha Lee (O’Hara) McCallister, 46

March 11, 2011

Trisha Lee (O’Hara) McCallister, 46, Plano, Texas, died Friday, March 4, 2011.

She was born Feb. 19, 1965, in Sandusky, Ohio, a daughter of Ernest and Phyllis (Smith) O’Hara, who survive, of Indiana.

She grew up in Huron, Ohio, and was a 1983 graduate of Huron High School.In 1987, she graduated from Bowling Green State University and later attained her CPA license.

Samantha Jo Painter, 22

Samantha Jo Painter, 22, Big Run, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at home.

She was born March 11, 1988, a daughter of Ernest Ray and Diana Sue (Haag) Painter Jr., who survive, of Punxsutawney.

Miss Painter was a 2006 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School. She then completed an online dog grooming course.

She attended Chestnut Grove Independent Church.

Miss Painter was a daycare attendant at Little Dreamers Daycare in Big Run.

Spack wins first bout; Young survives in consolation round

HERSHEY — Both of the Punxsy wrestling team's state-qualifiers are one victory away from a medal after each won a bout at the PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Spack (31-6), a junior, won his only bout of the day and will compete next in today's championship quarterfinals, and Young (32-3), a senior, went 1-1 Thursday and will next compete in the consolation second round.

Students, royalty celebrate Mulberry Mardi Gras

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The guests at Mulberry Square may not be able to attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but they were able to attend their own special Mardi Gras parade through the halls of the resident home.

The Mardi Gras parade has been an annual specialty for the past five years, Activities Director Vickie Amundson said.

Over the past five years, this has become a growing project, as many of the floats have been created by the residents with the guidance of Sue Keane.

PennDOT preparing for spring work on Rt. 119

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Route 119 Committee recently received an update on area highway construction projects from PennDOT District 10.
Timothy J. Jablunovsky, P.E., portfolio manager for PennDOT District 10, said with the arrival of spring, it will be time to complete some projects and begin others.

• Elk Run Bridge, and the 310 Intersection — This project is actually three projects occurring at this location, Jablunovsky said.

The first is the sight distance improvement project that will remove a house at the corner of Route 310 and Route 119 in Elk Run.

Young, Spack bring prior experience to states

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Kody Young and Seth Spack enter today's PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament with something that not many past Punxsy grapplers can lay claim to: Experience at states.

Both wrestlers have competed at the Giant Center in Hershey before. Spack was there last year as a Northwest Region runner-up. He was eliminated after two bouts.

Young, a senior, entered states as a sophomore as the region's No. 3 seed. After losing his first bout, he won to advance to the second day, only to be eliminated in his third match — one victory away from a medal.

John M. McMillen, 92

March 9, 2011

John M. McMillen, 92, Marion Center, died Monday, March 7, 2011, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

He was born in 1918 in South Mahoning Township, a son of the late Samuel A. and Emma (Martin) McMillen.

He was married to his wife of 63 years, Helen M. Plyler McMillen, who survives.

Mr. McMillen was a member of the Punxsutawney Alliance Church for 63 years, having served as elder and a board member for more than 30 years.

For 35 years, he was a director with the Indiana County Conservation District, and was named district director emeritus.

Samantha Painter, 22

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Big Run.

Joline C. Pifer, 80

March 9, 2011

Joline C. Pifer, 80, DuBois, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Monday, march 7, 2011, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

She was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Willis and Dorothy (Anderson) McGee.

Mrs. Pifer was a member of the Woodland Avenue United Methodist Church and was a 1949 graduate of Punxsutawney High School.

Punxsy wins DuBois Area Scholastic Challenge for first time

DUBOIS — Four students from Punxsutawney Area High School took first place in the 24th annual DuBois Area Senior Scholastic Challenge Wednesday night at PSU-DuBois' Hiller Auditorium, the first time that a Punxsy team has taken top honors in the event.

The team members — seniors Lucas Burke and Joe Long, junior Kendall Neal and freshman Kevin Hughes — garnered 135 total points in the final two rounds.

"Usually what happens is, whoever wins the first preliminary round takes first place," advisor Rose Graffius said. "That's not how it happened this year."
