Merle F. “Frank” Milliron, 89, Rochester Mills, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

Mr. Milliron was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.
He was married to Alverda (Plyler) Milliron, who survives, of Rochester Mills.

Mr. Milliron was a man of many talents: A Christmas tree trimming artist, stone mason, Truck Patch Farmery (grew giant pumpkins) and loved having dogs near.

Three Punxsy wrestlers advance to PJW states

CLARION — Led by a two-time state runner-up, a trio of Punxsy wrestlers will compete in the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championship Tournament this weekend at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre.

Kaleb Young, a runner-up at the PJW state tournament the past two years, will once again compete at states, which take place Friday and Saturday.

For the second-straight year, Young will be joined by Josh Schuckers and Troy Peace after all three finished within the top two places of their weight classes and age divisions at the Area V Tournament last Saturday at Clarion University.

County proclaims April as Child Abuse Prevention Month

BROOKVILLE — Tuesday, the Jefferson County Commissioners proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Jefferson County.

Pat Berger, executive director of Western PA CARES for Kids, was on hand for the proclamation. She said the effects of child abuse are long-term and far reaching.

“Child abuse is a community problem, and the community needs to be involved to prevent child abuse,” Berger said. “There are more than three million children abused each year, and the effects are felt by the whole area.”

Chamber hosts Marcellus info program

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Will Marcellus Shale drilling in the Punxsutawney area be an asset to area businesses?

That’s the question the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce hopes to answer when it hosts a program, “Marcellus Shale Development: Maximizing the Benefit for the Local Economy,” 7 p.m. Wednesday at the IUP Fairman Centre’s second-floor auditorium, 101 West Mahoning St.

Scarnati: How do we spend it?

PUNXSUTAWNEY — While saying that changes in policy are needed in some state government departments, State Sen. Joe Scarnati said Tuesday that the amount of money in this year’s proposed budget simply will not increase.

The state senate has held the line on taxes the last four years, and Scarnati said taxes will not be increased this year.

“It’s clear that taxpayers don’t have any more to give,” he said.
Therefore, he said the state has to find a way to fund necessary and desirable programs with the money available.

Lindsey company ready to roll with new tanker

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Out with the old and in with the new, as the Lindsey Fire Company received its new tanker Monday.

Lynn Kolaja, of Kolaja Fire Equipment Sales in Union City, said he drove the truck from Delavan, Wis., where it was built by U.S. Tanker.
Kolaja said the new tanker was constructed on a Freightliner commercial chassis; has a 3,000-gallon tank; a 3,000 gallon port-a-tank; and a 500-gallon-per- minute pump, which will allow firefighters to attach hose, if need be.

Scarnati salutes CRW for Small Business of the Year honors

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The honor was given last year, but Tuesday, state Sen. Joe Scarnati saluted CRW Home Center and its owners, Tim and Cindy Chambers, as the 2010 Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year.

The award is given annually to a business that exemplifies the values and principals of a community-oriented small business.

“These businesses are the foundation of our communities throughout the Commonwealth,” Scarnati said. “For that reason, it gives me great pleasure to be here today and to recognize CRW Home Center.”

Junior guards Weaver, Triponey lead Chucks' All-Stars

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the first time in more than a half-decade, two Punxsy underclassmen were named to the District IX Boys' Basketball League All-Star team.

Junior guards Logan Weaver and Daniel Triponey received the honor Monday, becoming the first non-senior tandem at PAHS to accomplish the feat since the 2004-2005 season. Along with senior Adam Vassallo, junior Dennis Manges and sophomore Devin Mesoraco were recognized as All-Stars six years ago.

Seniors Crago, Reitz named Lady Chucks' All-Stars

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A week after being selected to play in the 12th-annual Alice R. Kozel Foundation District IX Basketball All-Star games, seniors Shawnna Crago and Jenna Reitz were added to another All-Star list Monday night.

For the second-straight year, both Crago and Reitz were listed on the District IX Girls' Basketball League All-Star team.

Crago is one of the 10 girls' All-Stars, while Reitz was recognized as the girls' lone honorable mention.
