Chucks win big, improve to 11-1 on season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Filling nearly every weight class has benefitted the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team all season, and Wednesday night against Redbank Valley was no different, as the Chucks earned a 72-13 victory at home.

Punxsy would have won 36-13 on the mat if not for six forfeits, but with those easy wins, it registered the 59-point win. The Chucks (11-1) all but clinched their 11th-straight victory by scoring the first 36 points of the match.

Five pins help Raiders down St. Marys, 49-21

BROOKVILLE — Senior wrestler Dylan Buffington temporarily lost his confidence Thursday night after he was taken down by St. Marys' Ben Cheatle in the first period of their 160-pound bout.
Buffington doesn’t wrestle varsity much, but it didn’t show, as he didn’t panic, reversed Cheatle, and ended up scoring a pin before the end of the first period to earn his first win of the season. Buffington earned the Clint Puller award for outstanding wrestler of the match.
It was the first time he won a Puller Award for wrestling. He previously won one for track and field.

With new data, coalition will target family environments

BROOKVILLE — Informative data collected in 2009 through the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) was presented Tuesday by the Clearfield-Jefferson Drug Free Communities Coalition (DFCC) and Jefferson County Children & Youth Services (CYS).

The PAYS is submitted to students in grades six, eight, 10 and 12 every two years. The data was received late last year, and the two agencies have now designed a new program to target the key risk factors.

Nominations for Lil’ Mr., Miss Groundhog due today

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Today will conclude the submissions for this year’s Lil’ Mr. and Miss Groundhog. However, today is not too late to register.

To be nominated, the child must be a kindergarten student in the Punxsutawney Area School District, SS.C.D. or the Punxsutawney Christian School. Pictures of the child may be sent to the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center or dropped off during business hours, which are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

Local lawmakers: Shootings won’t keep them away

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Jan. 8 in Tucson, Ariz., shocked many people around the world and caused other public officials to possibly be more cautious when they make public appearances.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, who served in the House in Washington with Giffords, said he won’t allow that incident to stop him from meeting constituents.

Catherine Margaret Carlson, 92

Catherine Margaret Carlson, 92, Anita, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Punxsutawney.

She was born Aug. 6, 1918, in DeLancey, a daughter of the late Charles and Marie (Hinderliter) Carlson.

Dec. 9, 1933, she married Gilbert E. Carlson, who preceded her in death Nov. 4, 1985.

Mrs. Carlson was a member of the Anita Assembly of God Church, where she served as secretary for many years. She also served as a judge of elections in McCalmont Township for many years.

She was a devoted, loving and caring mother and grandmother.

John M. Hollenbaugh, 89

John M. Hollenbaugh, 89, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2011, at his daughter’s home in Creedmoor, Texas.

He was born Jan. 3, 1922, in Panic, a son of the late Eli and Mabel (Hayes) Hollenbaugh.

He was married to Grace E. Dinger, who preceded him in death June 18, 2008.

Mr. Hollenbaugh was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

He was employed as a general contractor and enjoyed woodworking.

Donald E. Lento, 74

January 20, 2011

Donald E. Lento, 74, Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, after a long battle with ALS at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born July 3, 1936, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Francis and Florence (Kingsley) Lento.

Oct. 26, 1977, he married Judith A. (Mock) Lento of Punxsutawney, who survives.

Mr. Lento was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a volunteer firefighter in the Punxsutawney area and Oregon, Ohio.

Beverly G. Mazik, 73

Beverly G. Mazik, 73, Brookville, went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her family at home.

She was born Sept. 13, 1937, in Wilkins Township, a daughter of the late Arthur and Edna Geyer.

She was the beloved wife of Thomas C. Mazik, who survives. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 10, 2010.

Caroline Means, 95

Caroline Means, 95, Punxsutawney, formerly of Valier, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

She was born June 10, 1915, in Punxsutawney, the oldest of five children of the late Clark and Mirtie Stoke Smith.

April 28, 1937, she married Forrest M. Means, who preceded her in death July 9, 1999. They had been married 62 years.

Mrs. Means worked as an elementary school teacher for more than 20 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of the Valier United Methodist Church and served in many capacities over the years.
