Athletes try to remain positive, dry during wet sports season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — First-year PAHS girls’ track and field coach Barry Young has a message for his athletes stuck on the bus or under shelter when the skies open up, as they have often this spring.

“There’s nothing you can do about it, so try to keep a positive attitude,” he said Thursday, one of the few days rain didn’t fall.
When asked what the rain gauge in his backyard said Thursday night, Charles Hoeh, the borough’s emergency management supervisor, replied, “Swim.”

County leaders explain budgeting process

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Taxpayers United for Representation Now (TURN) organized a public educational meeting to explain how the county commissioners determine the county’s budget and property tax rates.

Attending the meeting, which was held Thursday evening at the Lindsey Fire Hall, were commissioners Paul Corbin, Jim McIntyre and Jeff Pisarcik, along with candidates for commissioner David Black, Ira Sunderland and Paul Bishop.

Punxsy duo brings one-two punch to Golden Eagles

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Clarion University softball team has received a much-needed offensive punch, as Punxsutawney Area High School's No. 3 and 4 hitters recently chose the Lady Eagles as the college they will attend next year.

Punxsy seniors Shawnna Crago and Taylor Powell have decided upon Clarion, and both will begin to compete for the Lady Eagles next spring.

Powell, who will major in business, was the first of the two girls to pick Clarion. She chose Clarion over Penn State-The Behrend College, and that choice came down to a number of factors.

Very Rev. Gregory Allen Kirsch, J.C.L., V.F., 55

The Very Rev. Gregory Allen Kirsch, J.C.L., V.F., 55, who was currently serving as pastor of Christ the King Parish in Houtzdale and at Immaculate Conception Parish in Madera, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Clearfield Hospital.

He was born May 29, 1955, in Clearfield, a son of the late Clair Joseph and Ruth Ermina (Feighner) Kirsch. 

He attended St. Francis School from 1961 to 1969, then attended St. Francis High School, graduating in 1973.

Fr. Kirsch attended the Pennsylvania State University from 1973 to 1975 and then entered St. Mark Seminary, Erie.

Dutch down Chucks in weather-shortened match

ST. MARYS — The Punxsy boys' tennis team was unable to surmount St. Marys or the weather during the Dutch's 4-2 victory Wednesday at home over the Chucks.

Punxsy (3-4) lost three of five singles matches and dropped the No. 2 doubles match before rain put an end to the final three doubles matches.

St. Marys, the reigning District IX Class AA Team Champion, improved to 6-2 with the victory.

Robert E. Bennett, 86

Robert E. Bennett, 86, Rossiter, died Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at home.

He was born March 30, 1925, in Clymer, the son of the late Perry and Margaret (Shields) Bennett.

Jan. 12, 1946, he married Avanell Humble, who survives.

Mr. Bennett was a member of the former Rossiter Presbyterian Church. He served as a church elder, Sunday School teacher and former church treasurer.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was also a member of the American Legion of Rossiter and the Carpenters Union Local No. 2274 of Pittsburgh.

PASD budget: $2.7 million in cuts

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With all the budget cuts predicted from the state education budget, the Punxsutawney Area School District is proposing $2.7 million in cuts for its 2011-12 budget.

The Punxsy district, along with other districts in Pennsylvania, are having to create budgets that deal with a large number of cuts from the state as proposed by Gov. Tom Corbett.

Wednesday, Business Administrator Susan H. Robertson told the school board that the proposed 2011-12 expenses are $38,713,742, a decrease of $2,739,013, which represents a 6.61-percent decrease over last year’s budget.

Democrats prepare candidates for May 17

REYNOLDSVILLE — Democratic candidates hoping for party nominations to local office in the May 17 primary met Wednesday at the Bellamauro Social Hall in Reynoldsville.

Those speaking included candidates for county commission, magisterial district justice and county auditor.

Jefferson County Democratic Party Chairman Don Hilliard introduced the candidates, and thanked them for running. He also urged voters to turn out for the local elections.

The candidates for county commission vacancies include incumbent Jeffrey Pisarcik and challengers Tom Swab and Pat McFall.

PSP: ‘No criminal violations noted’ after fetus found in a jar

SYKESVILLE — Police say “no criminal violations were noted” following the discovery of a human fetus in a Mason jar at an apartment in Sykesville.

Tuesday, DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police said troopers were dispatched to a West Main Street apartment at 9:50 p.m. Saturday pertaining to a complaint from a landlord about a dog left without care in the apartment by tenants.

While a caretaker checked the conditions of the apartment, a Mason jar containing a human fetus was found inside the apartment, on top of a television, state police said.

Varsity softball suspended due to rain; JVs win 5-0

WINGATE — A pitchers' duel was ruined due to rain, as the Punxsy and Bald Eagle varsity softball teams were unable to complete a 1-1 game Tuesday afternoon.

With the contest tied at one through four innings, lightning paused the game before a downpour stopped the game. Punxsy manager Alan Pifer was unsure if the game will continue at a later date.

Punxsy senior Shawnna Crago pitched four innings and allowed one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout. She also scored Punxsy's only run of the game.
