Amid sun, heat and waves, Cherian continues canoe trip for Fox Foundation

August 5, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Of all the items that Michael Cherian packed for his canoe journey via the Mississippi River to New Orleans, one has become invaluable almost every day.

“I love my mosquito net,” Cherian said Thursday, taking a break from his 2,000-mile canoe trip. “I take care of it. I’m really glad I brought it. As soon as the sun sets, I grill until it’s dark then have to set up camp. By then, they’re out biting you.”

Fire crews and fire police from Punxsutawney closed Route 119 from Route 210 south toward the scene.

Scanner transmissions also indicated the people in the area of the crash were evacuated.

Also responding to the scene were Perry Township firefighters, Indiana County's Hazmat unit and PennDOT, among others.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During Tuesday’s Public Safety committee meeting, Punxsutawney Memorial Library Director Coral Ellshoff said she would like to improve the signage and increase the visibility of the entrance at the library.

Punxsutawney preps for second tourney

August 4, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Little League complex will be just as crowded this weekend as it was last weekend, and for a very similar reason.

This time, though, softball will be the sport highlighted instead of baseball, as 20 teams from across the region will play in four different age groups: Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16.

Punxsy will be represented in three of the age brackets.

Hetrick said the festival is known throughout the area. He helps spread the word, delivering a booklet detailing the festival to 15 different Roman and Byzantine Catholic churches from Coalport to Clarion every summer.

Work progressing downtown, but delays continue for now

August 3, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Progress continues on the downtown Punxsutawney Traffic signal upgrade project, according to Roger Steele, chairman of Public Works.

Steele, who spoke at Tuesday's meeting, said that traffic has been snarled during the day all week, with the installation of the new lights and poles yet to come.

Traffic will get worse before it gets better, he said, as crews continue to move forward with the upgrade.

Punxsy heads to states with high hopes

August 3, 2011

The 15- and 16-year old VFW Teener League All-Star state tournament kicks off this weekend in Huntingdon, and Punxsy will be well represented as it was at the 13- and 14-year old state tournament in Punxsy last weekend.

According to Punxsy manager Mike Klingensmith, his players are ready for the tournament, though they don't seem over-confident, either.
