Doris J. Meneely, 92

June 19, 2011

Doris J. Meneely, 92, Punxsutawney, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Meneely was born May 25, 1919, in Loop, a daughter of the late H. Merle and Edna (Domb) Hoover.

June 19, 1947, she married Clair L. Meneely, who preceded her in death in 1976.

Mrs. Meneely worked for Farmers & Miners Bank and the Punxsutawney Area School District. She was a faithful and active member of the First United Methodist Church and was a volunteer for the Punxsutawney Genealogical Society.

William E. Pounds, 90

William E. Pounds, 90, Punxsutawney, died Friday, June 17, 2011, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 8, 1921, in Kent, a son of the late Ray Engle and Helen M. (Berquist) Pounds.

July 5, 1988, he married Magdalene E. Lucas, who survives.

He was a U.S. Army Tech 4 from 1942 to 1945, and he worked as a truck driver for Cook Moving Systems Inc. of Buffalo, N.Y.

Mr. Pounds was a member of the Rossiter American Legion and the Teamster Union of Buffalo.

William I. "Bill" Reitz Sr., 75

William I. "Bill" Reitz Sr., 75, Brookville, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1935, in Ringgold, a son of the late Ervin Joyle and Ruth (Buck Pierce) Reitz.

He was married to Sandra L. Depp, who preceded him in death Oct. 21, 1995.

Mr. Reitz was the former owner/operator of Emery's Tin Ship in Brookville.

He was a U.S. Army sergeant in the mortar platoon serving during the Korean Conflict.

When Paul Hense isn’t battling fires here, he’s guiding efforts to tame extreme wildfires

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For anyone who thinks there’s no a difference between fighting wildfires and structure fires, just ask Punxsutawney Fire Department Chief Paul Hense, who will conclude his tenure as chief at the end of the year.

Hense, who works full-time for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the Bureau of Forestry, recently returned from battling wildfires in Texas.

He said he was never scared while battling the blazes, but he was concerned.

Borough earns grant for S. Main Street project

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council has been approved to receive a $400,000 H2O grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) for the South Main Street sewer project.

Monday, borough engineer Brian Sekula, of The the EADS Group, said the total cost for the project is $795,500.

Sekula said in discussions with DCED, the $400,000 could be switched to the West Mahoning Street project, and the borough could receive money for a reduced project for South Main Street.

Miners send four to tonight's All-Star game

HOMER CITY — The Federation League All-Stars will take on the All-Stars from the Indiana County League 7 p.m. tonight at First Commonwealth Field in Homer City. Both leagues have selected standout players from each of the teams, nominated and voted upon by each leagues’ players.

All of the proceeds will go to Pennsylvania Junior Legion Baseball regional and state tournaments, which will also be held at First Commonwealth Field.

Punxsutawney's Devin Mesoraco struggled Friday night against the Toledo Mud Hens. Mesoraco, who plays for the Class AAA minor league team, the Louisville Bats, has become known as one of the heavy hitters in the International League.

Mesoraco, the 2007 first-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, had a tough night Friday as he went 0-for-3 from the plate, but he was struck out just once.

During the bottom of the ninth, with the score tied at one, Mesoraco was intentionally walked by relief pitcher Matt Hoffman, negating that chance at bat.

County eyes axing jury commissioner posts to save money

BROOKVILLE — This week, the Jefferson County Commissioners said eliminating the positions of jury commissioner would save the county $12,000.

“Twelve-thousand dollars — that is the savings. That, in and of itself, is enough for me,” commissioner Jim McIntyre said.

The elimination of this position is a statewide movement proposed a few years ago. It has passed in the state House of Representatives and is now in the state Senate.

County Commission Chairman Paul Corbin called the position a “duplication of services.”

Rain visits ‘Third Thursday,’ but there’s always next month

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The kickoff of the first-ever “Third Thursday” Festival sponsored by PRIDE began Thursday night, but the weather had something to say about it. But despite the downpour of rain throughout the day, it did not stop local community members and downtown Punxsy businesses from coming out and supporting the event.

Participating businesses offered free hors d’oeuvres, desserts and drinks. Most businesses even promoted a sale on merchandise.

The next “Third Thursday” Festival will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 21, with all festivities being held on Mahoning Street.

Parking tags for the 2014-15 school year will be given out on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7:30 a.m. in the high school office...
