R. Margaret (Peg) Elkin, 91

June 27, 2011

R. Margaret (Peg) Elkin, 91, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Porter Township, a daughter of the late Edward A. and Bertha Mae (Blose) Kennedy.

June 12, 1941, she married John M. Elkin, who preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1991.

Mrs. Elkin was a former member of the Zion Methodist Church in Porter, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of United Commercial Travelers, the Nash Ramblers bowling team, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Adrian Hospital and the 500 Card Club.

Glenn L. Leasure, 81

Glenn L. Leasure, 81, Brookville, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

He was born Feb. 16,1930, a son of the late Everett J. and Margaret (Wise) Leasure.

Mr. Leasure was a mechanic at General Electric. He was also employed at Sam Jack Drilling and Fairman Drilling.

Protestant in faith, Mr. Leasure attended the Albion EUB Church.
He loved spending time with his family and friends, his cats, his bunnies and working with his hands, especially doing mechanical work.

Nancy J. Neale, 53

Nancy J. Neale, 53, Punxsutawney, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born July 5, 1957, in New Martinsville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Albert and Lula (Slater) Summers.

Sept. 6, 1986, she married Jack E. Neale, who survives, of Punxsutawney.

Mrs. Neale loved reading and especially loved her cats.

She was a loving wife who will be greatly missed.

Calvin Dick Yount, 82

Calvin Dick Yount, 82, Valier, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois.

He was born May 6, 1929, in Ramseytown, a son of the late Charles Marvin and J. Ruth (Dinger) Yount.

March 20, 1953, he married Doris J. (Brosius) Yount, who survives.
Mr. Yount was a member of the Punxsutawney chapters of the VFW, the American Legion, the Army-Navy Club and the Loyal Order of Moose.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of second lieutenant with the Pennsylvania National Guard.

Music in the Park, the summertime series founded by John Serian a number of years ago, will again return to Barclay Square for seven straight Thursdays, a week after the Groundhog Festival concludes.

Big Run fire chief asks residents to look out for suspicious behavior

BIG RUN — Following a string of suspicious and undetermined fires that have occurred in the Big Run area over the last several months, Big Run Area Fire Department Chief Todd Peace is asking residents to be on the lookout for any suspicious behavior.

Big Run Council President Nick Lantz said due to the suspicious fires, Peace is asking area residents to report any peculiar
activities that may be occurring —especially around some of the borough’s blighted properties.

The most recent fire was the Big Run Carpet fire last Sunday morning.

Miners to host Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament

ROSSITER — The Rossiter Miners' Federation League baseball team will host the second-annual Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament today and Sunday at Shaffer Field in Rossiter.

Four games will be played in the tournament this weekend, with three games featuring the hometown Miners.

All proceeds from food and beverage sales will go toward the Walker's Warriors Relay for Life team. There will also be silent auctions and raffles, with a pink bat autographed by Punxsy native and current Cincinnati Reds prospect Devin Mesoraco being the main piece raffled off.

MESORACO WATCH

Former Punxsutawney Area High School catcher Devin Mesoraco has become one of the top producers of doubles in the Triple-A International League, where he plays for the Louisville Bats. This week, he added four doubles to his season total.

Mesoraco's 26 doubles on the season for the Cincinnati Reds' affiliate is good enough for second in the International League, trailing Jim Gallagher of the Charlotte Knights by just one double.

Mesoraco started the week with five consecutive one-hit games, including last Saturday's 1-for-3 performance, during which he doubled and walked.

June Bianco, 88

June 24, 2011

June Bianco, 88, Sharpsville, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully of natural causes with her family at her side Thursday, June 23, 2011, at the Critical Care Unit at UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell.
Mrs. Bianco was born June 10, 1923, in Walston, the daughter of the late Grover and Verda Jane (Siverling) Haag.

May 21, 1941, she married Peter J. Bianco, who preceded her in death Feb. 5, 2001.

Mrs. Bianco graduated from Punxsutawney High School. In 1954 at the age of 33, she moved to the Shenango Valley area.
