Two DuBois men injured in severe 119 crash

PUNXSUTAWNEY —Two drivers escaped with their lives in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday along Route 119 by Riker’s Yard, Bell Township.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, a 2004 Jeep Liberty driven by Timothy D. Brosius, 61, DuBois, was traveling north on Route 119 when he crossed the center line and struck the left front of a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 conversion van driven by Anthony M. Weible, 52, DuBois, which was traveling south.

WEXFORD — The Punxsy boys' soccer team traveled to Wexford for the opening round of the PIAA tournament Tuesday evening, and despite falling 6-0 to the defending state champions, the Hampton Talbots, the Chucks gained valuable experience and put another notch in their program's belt.

Punxsy head coach Phil Shenkle said he was proud of the way his team played, but said without seeing the level of competition at states it was hard to know what exactly to prepare for.

Tuesday night, the Punxsutawney Football 1st & 10 Club held a banquet to honor the football players and cheerleaders that participated in grades seven through 12 this season. The banquet gave the players, coaches and parents one final opportunity to honor the senior members especially. Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol thanked the seniors for all they've given to the program and for everything they've left behind for their teammates.

First to 10 wins! Defense dominates at tourney

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After offensive explosions ruled the first night of the elementary basketball tournament Monday, defense took center stage Tuesday, as in each of the five games, one team or the other was held to 10 points or fewer.

In the first contest of the evening, the fourth- and fifth-grade game between the Heat and the 76ers, stifling defense by the 76ers held the Heat to seven points and earn a 15-7 win.

Megan Ray scored seven points to lead the offensive attack for the 76ers, while Ally Whitman matched her total for leading scorer with seven for the Heat.

All their wishes came true: Seniors win Powderpuff game

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A pair of first-half turnovers proved to be key in the Savage Seniors' victory over the Jaw-Dropping Juniors in Monday night's Powderpuff football game beneath the lights of Jack LaMarca Stadium in Punxsutawney.

Seniors Tori Martin and Cassie Cook each had first-half interceptions that led to touchdowns for the Senior squad and proved to be enough to hold off the Jaw-Droppers 24-8.

Look out states, here come the Chucks!

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Last week at this time, the Chucks soccer team was preparing for a re-match with District-IX defending champion Bradford and the coaching staff was delivering the message every staff would deliver before a playoff game: Don't look past this game.

Well, the Chucks won that game in an overtime thriller over the Owls, and suddenly the focus switched to looking past the game and preparing for the state tournament, which kicks off tonight with a game against the defending state champion and reigning District-VII champion Hampton.

Scoring abounds on opening night of tourney

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Elementary Basketball Tournament is officially under way after a slate of five games was held Monday night in Punxsutawney.

In the sixth-grade contests, it became quite obvious that to win the tournament, teams will have to put up large numbers on the scoreboard, as the winning teams scored 32 and 28 points in the two games.

In the first game, between Penn State and Pitt, Kaitlyn Doverspike led the scoring with 12 points for Penn State and led her team to a 32-19 win.

Pitt's Kylie Lingenfelter was close behind in the scoring category with 10 points.

The Savage Seniors defeated the Jaw-Dropping Juniors 24-8 in Monday night’s Powderpuff game at Jack LaMarca Stadium. At halftime, Matt Rowland (second from right) — escorted by Adrienne Hess — was crowned king of the King’s Court, and Kendall Neal (second from left) — escorted by Abigail Wright — was crowned prince.

Chamber, PRIDE reinforce staying ‘home’ during Home for the Holidays

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The holiday season will not begin and end with the annual Home for the Holidays parade, the Circle of Trees illumination and the arrival of Santa Claus.

The Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce and PRIDE seek groups, businesses and organization to host current and ongoing holiday activities for Punxsy’s month-long Christmas celebration: From the start of special events Saturday, Nov. 26, through Christmas Day.

Kenneth D. Bush, 55

Kenneth D. Bush, 55, of Medina, N.Y., entered into rest Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at the Strong Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 4, 1956, in Medina, a son of the late Albert and Blanche (Rice) Bush.

Mr. Bush was a 1974 graduate of Medina High School. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Medina, an avid Jeff Gordon NASCAR fan and a supporter of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres.
