Make it two home sweeps for Punxsy

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks' kept Clearfield off the board in each of five singles' matches and won the overall contest 9-0 Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

"We were really happy to be able to host the Clearfield team today," Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius said after the match. "All the members of the PHS girls' team were able to play during the match."

Punxsy's No. 1 singles player, Anna Monyak, was the first to pick up her victory, sweeping Clearfield's Yesh Potel 6-0, 6-0.

Colton Elbel Baughman, 22

Colton Elbel Baughman, 22, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at home.

He was born April 6, 1989, in Punxsutawney, a son of Bruce Baughman and Sandra Elbel, who survive.

He attended Clarion University and was a 2007 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School, where he ran cross country and track.

Colton was a member of the Oliver Township Fire Co.

An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting, motorcycles and hanging out with family and friends.

He was employed by Weatherford Well Head of Punxsutawney.

David H. Burkett, 62

David H. Burkett, 62, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born March 16, 1949, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Kermit F. and Earlajane (Jones) Burkett.

Mr. Burkett was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Karen Kent, whom he married July 14, 1973, as well as a loving and devoted father to the other true love of his life, his daughter, Kelly Rieth, both of whom survive.

Ss.C.D. basketball splits with Johnsonburg

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Ss.C.D. girls' basketball squad split Saturday's match up against Johnsonburg.

The fifth-grade girls' began the day but struggled against an opponent with more height and ultimately lost 21-17.

The Ss.C.D. girls were out-rebounded by 25 and could not make up the disadvantage.

Emily Griebel led the scoring with seven, and Kylee Shoemaker was a close second, putting four points on the board.

Megan Ray, Bailey Jones and Kyrie Nestel each added two points to round out the scoring for the fifth-graders.

Brookville runs over Keystone for first win

KNOX — The Brookville Raiders varsity football squad evened its record at 1-1 with a dominating 36-6 victory over the Panthers of Keystone.

Raiders head coach Chris Dworek said he was pleased with the whole team effort, as both the offense and defense shined in Friday night's victory.

"It is a big relief (to win)," Dworek said. "The guys work hard most of the time, so it's something that you earn. It makes it feel even better, knowing that they worked hard and earned it. It's like cashing a paycheck, so they feel pretty good about themselves."

John Brocheys, 76

John Brocheys, 76, DuBois, passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, surrounded by family at his daughter's home.

He was born Aug. 27, 1935, in Big Soldier, a son of the late Arthur Brocheys and Mildred (Fye) Brocheys-Gaul.

He worked at Brockway Glass as a machine operator for 30 years and retired in 1990. Mr. Brocheys was a member of the VFW and the Glass Blowers' Association. He was an avid hunter, and many of his prize trophies are displayed in Dario's Bar.

Lucille May Grossi, 80

Lucille May Grossi, 80, Punxsutawney, formerly of Anita, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born June 27, 1931, in Anita, the daughter of the late Roy C. and Julia (Anderson) Walker.

Oct. 23, 1973, she married Joseph Secondo Grossi, who preceded her in death April 25, 1996.

Mrs. Grossi worked as a tax collector.

She enjoyed playing Bingo and gambling at Seneca. She really loved and enjoyed the company of her yellow cat.

Jeanette M. McQuown, 89

Jeanette M. McQuown, 89, Punxsutawney, passed away, Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Jefferson Manor, Brookville.

She was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Indiana County, a daughter of the late Joseph and Maude (Cornman) Kerr.

She was married 45 years to Kenneth L. McQuown, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. McQuown worked for many years as a baker at Ruth & Harry's Bakery, and she also enjoyed making beautiful quilts.

While at Jefferson Manor, she made many close friends with the caregivers and residents at Jefferson Court.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Vernon C. Martin, 82

Vernon C. Martin, 82, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

He was born Sept. 5, 1929, in Trade City, a son of the late Elmer W. and Idabelle Gaul (Martin).

March 25, 1950, he married Marian Gahagan Martin, who survives.
Mr. Martin was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Trade City. He was a member of the Mahoning Grange No. 1732 and a National Guard veteran.

He was a retired farmer who also had a trucking and excavating business.
