Foradora denies Rega's appeal

BROOKVILLE — Another chapter in the appellate process of Robert Gene Rega has concluded, as Jefferson County President Judge John Foradora on Thursday denied Rega’s amended petition for Habeas Corpus Relief.

June 21, 2002, Rega was convicted of first-degree murder and various other offenses.

Upon the sentencing jury’s recommendation, the court sentenced him to death. Since that time, Rega has been housed at SCI-Greene awaiting execution.

Rega was convicted of killing night watchman Christopher Lauth at the Gateway Lodge in the Dec. 22, 2000, robbery and shooting at the lodge.

Supervisor: Tank might have a year of life left

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Wednesday, members of the Punxsutawney Area School Board received a recommendation from the district’s maintenance department regarding the replacement of a cold water storage tank at Longview Elementary School.

The tank was leaking, but when a maintenance crew went to fix it, another leak started, Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe said.

The 1,000-gallon tank is the original to the building, and now, the district is on borrowed time as far as its reliability — maybe a year, said Phil Heitzenrater, district maintenance supervisor.

Five in a row: Punxsy ends season as 2-seed

DUBOIS — The Lady Chucks' volleyball team ended its season on a high note — winning five in a row to lock up the second seed in the District IX playoffs — with a convincing three-game sweep of the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals, 25-11, 25-5, 25-11, Thursday night in DuBois.

"It was nice to see everyone getting stats this match," Punxsy head coach Lisa Kephart said of her team's all-around effort. "The girls played well tonight and had fun. Our serving was really tough, as we only missed four serves the entire match."

Two pair and a kicker lead Chucks to finals

DUBOIS — On a frigid night in DuBois, Punxsy kicked off the opening round of the District IX Class AA boys' soccer playoffs with a 5-1 win over St. Marys during which Ty Zimmerman and Tyler Presloid each scored a pair of goals, and Tanner Evans added another.

BROOKVILLE — Coming off a four-game skid, the Punxsy Chucks football team hopes to bounce back as it heads into the Route 36 Rivalry game tonight against the Raiders in Brookville. But the Chucks' spirits aren't broken, according to Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol.

East End invites everyone to a spooky time

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It should be a hauntingly good time in Punxsy’s East End during its annual Halloween trick-or-treat night Saturday, with many scary surprises for little and big ghosts and goblins.

If trick-or-treaters are looking for a frightening — yet fun — experience, they should check out the display at the home of Michele “Boo” Lorenzo and Jan Zamperini, 709 East Mahoning St., from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday during East End’s trick-or-treat night.

Lorenzo said this is the ninth year for her Halloween spectacular, and all for the same reason: For the kids.

Stephanie A. Georgek, 46

Stephanie A. Georgek, 46, of Treasure Lake, DuBois, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 23, 1965, in DuBois, a daughter of the late John E. Rieg Sr. and Cloyann (Frease) Rieg Hurd.

Sept. 23, 1989, she married Mark K. Georgek, who survives.

Mrs. Georgek was a controller at Hardware Specialties in DuBois for 11 years.

She attended St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in DuBois.

Edna Marie Shaffer, 75

Edna Marie Shaffer, 75, Brookville, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at home.

She was born June 7, 1936, in Reynoldsville, a daughter of the late Donald S. and Arveda (Sprague) Reed.

April 12, 1958, she married John Irvin Shaffer, who survives.

Mrs. Shaffer was a member of the Ramsaytown United Methodist Church.
She was also a former member of Green Valley Grange and the Ramsaytown United Methodist Ladies’ Aid.

She enjoyed being with her family, reading and knitting.

Rebert’s arrest: Which state laws to follow?

BROOKVILLE — In a continuance hearing Wednesday, the prosecution and the defense in the case of the Commonwealth vs. Steven Patrick Rebert were on opposite sides on which set of laws should be used regarding a June 2010 traffic stop during which he was arrested by law enforcement in his native state of New York.

The issue, pertaining to items taken from Rebert’s pockets during the stop and his statements to police: Should the court look at those issues in accordance to Pennsylvania or New York state laws?
