The communityâs newest chiropractor conducted the ceremonial opening surrounded by his friends and family (from left): Charles H. Merrow, Pat Merrow, Tim Merrow, Lindsay Vite and Andrew Roberts. A 2009 graduate of New York Chiropractic College, Merrow, who was born and raised in Punxsutawney, said he always wanted to open a practice in the area.
Douglas S. âTutâ Toth, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, after spending an amazing weekend with his family.
He was a son of Harry P. and Lois Jean (Stanford) Toth.
Mr. Toth was married to Rhonda Toth.
He was known for his love of sports and coaching abilities, the love of hunting and the outdoors, and his caring heart and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need.
Mr. Toth served the youth of the area as a softball, baseball, basketball and soccer coach through the years.
Paul H. Beck, 86, Route 119, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born April 21, 1924, in Winslow Township, a son of the late Cleveland L. and Mary (Lindemuth) Beck.
May 25, 1957, he married the former Nora Lorraine Wachob, who survives.
Mr. Beck previously worked for Gaston Lumber.
He was a member of the Henderson Grange No. 1315 and the Ponoma Grange. He volunteered for the Jefferson County Fair for many years since the 1960s, when it was located in Sykesville and called the Town & Country Fair.

INDIANA â Two Chucks scored 20-plus points, but the Punxsy boys' basketball team didn't play enough defense while losing to one-win Indiana Wednesday night, 62-55.
Experience was in Punxsy's favor, as all nine of the Chucks (3-4) who played are seniors or juniors. Indiana (2-9), meanwhile, received 18 of its season-high 62 points from three freshmen.
Punxsy first-year head coach Dirk Neal, who has stressed a team that defends with intensity and enthusiasm since he took the job, wasn't the least bit pleased with the way his defense performed Wednesday.
HOLLIDAYSBURG â Upon winning four of the first five bouts Tuesday against Hollidaysburg to build a 22-3 advantage, the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team surged toward a 57-23 victory on the road.
"We had another nice win tonight. The kids wrestled pretty well, and we saw a lot of nice things out there," Punxsy head coach Bill Burke said. "Intensity was good, and they got the job done even with a couple of starters â Matt Burke and Darin James â out of the lineup due to illness."
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The PAHS senior class recently chose six senior girls to represent the 2011 Winter Queenâs Court.
This yearâs court includes Tawnee Bowers, Kayla Knox, Megan Muth, Hannah Neal, Sam Osikowicz and Taylor Powell.
The senior girl with the highest number of votes will reign as queen and the senior girl with the second highest number of votes will reign as princess.
The crowning will take place during halftime of Fridayâs varsity basketball game against Brookville.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Friday, less than a month shy of the 125th Groundhog Day, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, in partnership with Punxsutawney Philâs Official Souvenirs, will release the 2011 plush Phil.
This year, in celebration of the holidayâs quasquicentennial however, the plush Punxsutawney Phil is accompanied by someone new â someone less acclaimed, less acknowledged and perhaps, less appreciated: A plush Punx-sutawney Phyllis.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â No one would ever think that the PAHS Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test would be the catalyst to reunite a long-lost possession with its owner, but that is exactly what happened in a serendipitous string of events in late December at PAHS.
Each year, PAHS administers the ASVAB test to students who plan to enlist in the military. A representative from ASVAB works in conjunction with junior guidance counselor, Jenny White, to administer the test on the designated date.
Hazel Helene Minnick, 91, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Punxsutawney, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers.
She was born April 20, 1919, in Harmony, one of 11 children of Thomas and Violet (Beatty) Young Sr. Â
She was married to Edward James Minnick Sr., who preceded her in death in 1999.
Mrs. Minnick lived in Punxsutawney for 40 years prior to moving to State College for about 10 years, and then settled in southwest Florida.
January 4th
Led by senior defensive lineman Ben Blazavich, five Punxsy football players were recently named Pennsylvania Football News All-State players, with each classification getting four teams on both offense and defense for a total of 32 all-state teams.
Also included on the team as Honorable Mention were senior linebacker Ian Weaver, senior defensive back Duell Thompson, senior defensive lineman Devon Luzell and junior quarterback Logan Weaver.
