Lady Chucks claim AML season kickoff

September 10, 2011

BROCKWAY — The Punxsy girls' golf team kicked off its Allegheny Mountain League schedule with a win over Brockway Thursday afternoon in Brockway.

Five teams competed at the meet, and Punxsy entered the lowest score, but the only match that counted for record was the head-to-head matchup with Brockway.

Punxsy's overall record is now 3-0, with a 1-0 record in the AML.

Punxsy will host all four teams — Brookville, Brockway, DuBois and Ridgway — in its next meet Monday.

PAHS students share what they recall, what they have learned since Sept. 11, 2001

September 9, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — That Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, some of them were in school, some of them were at home. Mostly, they didn’t understand why their parents were fixated on their televisions, which were showing images of crashing airplanes, smoke, fire and crumbling towers.

When they asked about what was happening, some of their parents delicately tried to explain how some bad people were trying to hurt their country. Other parents encouraged them to keep doing what they were doing, playing outdoors or elsewhere. Some parents didn’t say anything.

JOHN LAURSEN: A retired NY/NJ Port Authority police officer faces the horrors of the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks

September 9, 2011

BROOKVILLE — It could have been a day like any other.

The sky was a beautiful clear blue, dotted with wisps of clouds.

The kind of sky that didn’t expect what was handed to it that morning.

The kind of sky that didn’t want anything or anybody to blot out its beauty.

But someone tried. Someone tried very hard.

Above everything that happened that day, and over the past 10 years, it’s what John Laursen remembers most.

“The sky ... it was a beautiful, beautiful, blue sky, and I’ll never forget it,” he said.

CHUCK DEPP: Retired PSP trooper manned the inner perimeter of Flight 93 crash

September 9, 2011

UNIONTOWN – That sunny day in September 2011, retired Pennsylvania Police State Trooper Chuck Depp knew what had happened in New York City. He knew what had happened in Washington, D.C.

And at a certain point the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, he knew what had happened in Shanksville, about 60 miles away in Somerset County.

“I knew what was going on, because I had a experience with some other plane crashes in my career,” said Depp, who retired as the head of detectives at Troop B’s Uniontown barracks, Fayette County.

That was around 10 a.m.

Lady Chucks serve their way to sweep

September 9, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Behind strong serving — with a total of 19 aces over three games — the Lady Chucks volleyball team swept Brockway, 3-0, to earn its first regular season win.

Punxsy's Janie Depp-Hutchinson led the team with seven aces, including five in the first game, and Sydney Weaver added six aces for Punxsy.

"I think one of our strengths as a team is serving," head coach Lisa Kephart said. "We have a lot of great servers throughout the rotation. They do well, and when they serve it hard and get it in, they're usually hard to defend."

Chucks win big over Curwensville, 9-0

September 9, 2011

CURWENSVILLE — The Punxsy boys' soccer team poured on early and often in Curwensville, scoring seven goals in the first half alone, and went on to win by a final score of 9-0 Thursday afternoon.

Tyler Pressloid put Punxsy on the board at 8:52 of the first half on a goal assisted by Tanner Evans — a goal that would prove to be the game-winner.

Just five minutes later, Evans scored a goal of his own, this time an unassisted.

Evans struck again for Punxsy at the 25-minute mark, assisted by Brycen Lunger.
