Dan ‘The Packers Fan’ makes good on Make-A-Wish challenge

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For Dan Prutznal, it can be tough being a Green Bay Packers fan in Steelers Country.

“Last week, someone brought in a copy of Sports Illustrated, and in the cafeteria, where I eat lunch with the kids, I held it up,” showing a piece about the Packers, he said. “The kids were just hollering: ‘Boo, Packers,’ ‘I don’t like the Packers.’ Every time they see me ... it’s all in good fun.”

Friends invited to celebrate Riggleman tonight

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In times of tragedy, Drinda and Brian Smith believe it is good for people to get together and interact with others to begin the healing process.

A little over a month has gone by since the tragic passings of Joel Riggleman — Drinda and Brian's son — Dylan "Shorty" Behrendt and Sean McConnaughey in a single-vehicle accident Nov. 12 in Armstrong County.

Alexander Simon Dubensky, 81

Alexander Simon Dubensky, 81, of DeLancey died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born March 7, 1930, in DeLancey, a son of the late Michael L. and Mary (Quashnock) Dubensky.

He was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Church in Punxsutawney.
April 18, 1959, he married the former Mary Ellen Zelman, who preceded him in death Aug. 10, 1993.

Mr. Dubensky was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country during the Korean conflict.

He worked as a machinist for Star Iron Works for more than 30 years.

Margaret L. Stiteler Orr, 70

Margaret L. Stiteler Orr, 70, of Indiana, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at UPMC Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born in 1941 in North Mahoning Township, a daughter of the late James H. and June L. (Van Horn) Coon.

She married Richard Orr, who survives, of Indiana.

Mrs. Orr was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Smicksburg for her entire life.

She was a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her family.

Floyd Melvin Stanford, 90

Floyd Melvin Stanford, 90, passed away peacefully Nov. 16, 2011, at the Veterans' Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas.

He was born Jan. 10, 1921, in Rimersburg, a son of the late Richard M. Stanford and Gertrude (Bell) Stanford.

June 26, 1941, he married Dorothy Aldine (Mottern) Stanford.

They had three children, Carol Kay Stanford and Ricky Vay Stanford, both of Bryan, Texas, and the late Richard Ray Stanford. They also had nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In the season-opening dual meet for the Punxsy varsity wrestling team, the Chucks jumped out to an early 30-0 lead and cruised to a 66-9 victory over the Marion Center Stingers Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

The PAHS basketball and wrestling seasons are officially under way, and boy, am I glad.

In an exciting fashion, the girls' and boys' basketball teams tipped off their seasons at the Marion Center Tip-Off Tournament last Friday and Saturday.

And just last night, the varsity wrestlers earned an impressive 66-9 victory over an under-manned, but talented, Marion Center squad.

Dannie Allen Austin, 65

Dannie Allen Austin, 65, Punxsutawney, passed away, Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011.

He was born June 14, 1946, in Hanson, Ky., a son of the late Rufus Elbert and Girdie Lee (Ruby) Austin.

He was married to Christine J. (Stoffella) Austin, who survives, for 31 years.

Mr. Austin loved his family and friends above all else. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

Donald J. Frye, 65

Donald J. Frye, 65, DuBois, died suddenly at home Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011.

He was born July 8, 1946, in Rochester Mills, a son of the late Blair and Edna (Leasure) Frye.

He was married to Karen (Shaffer) Frye, who survives.

Mr. Frye served for 15 years with Company B, 728th Maintenance Battalion of the Clearfield National Guard. He was a retired railroad trackman for the B&O and Conrail Railroads.

He was a volunteer for the AARP and Protestant by faith, an active member of the Tri-County Church of God.

John A. Pape Sr., 93

John A. (Bid) Pape Sr., 93, of Punxsutawney, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at St. Andrews Village in Indiana.

He was born April 5, 1918, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Carmen and Concetta (Nace) Pape.

Feb. 3, 1940, he married Carolyn (Brown) Pape, who preceded him in death April 9, 1991.

Mr. Pape was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.

He was an avid boxer and baseball player in his youth and went on to play professional baseball as a catcher with the Detroit Tigers in 1941.
