Punxsy squad dominant in win at Curwensville

CURWENSVILLE — Punxsy's junior high school wrestlers won 10-of-11 matches that took place on the mat in Curwensville, losing 18 points by forfeit, to cruise to a 54-24 victory over the Golden Tide Thursday night in Curwensville.

"We were pretty pleased with our kids" performances at Curwensville," Punxsy head coach Bill Burke said. "We have to be, considering we only lost one bout on the mat. I was a little worried about how they would perform, being that we haven't wrestled since Dec. 21."

Hazel J. Hinderliter, 99

Hazel J. Hinderliter, 99, formerly of Frostburg, died Sunday Jan. 8, 2012, in Towson, Md., where she lived with her daughter Nedra for three years.

She was born Aug. 28, 1912, a daughter of the late Joseph and Blanche (Anthony) Palmer.

Dec. 3, 1931, she married Kermit J. Hinderliter, who preceded her in death Jan. 13, 1994.

She was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed quilting and crocheting.

Bertha A. (Kauffman) Hoffman, 84

Bertha A. (Kauffman) Hoffman, 84, Erie, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at Pleasant Ridge Manor East.

She was born Oct. 29, 1927, in Clearfield County, a daughter of the late Henry and Catherine (Lee) Kauffman.

She was married to James W. Hoffman, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hoffman was an 11-year resident of Erie and enjoyed time spent with her family and friends. She lived in Punxsutawney for more than 30 years.

Robert Edward Anderson Sr., 79

Robert Edward Anderson Sr., 79, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, in Melbourne, Fla.

He was born April 17, 1932, in Greensburg, a son of the late Joseph and Bessie (Matthews) Anderson.

He was married to Mary Johnston Anderson, who survives.

Mr. Anderson was employed as a teacher for the Punxsutawney Area School District.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean conflict, and was a member of the Westmoreland Lodge No. 518 and Accepted Masons.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney.

Clyde K. Mohney, 89

Clyde K. Mohney, 89, Punxsutawney, died Sunday Jan. 8, 2012, at Dubois Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 20, 1922, a son of the late John C. and Fannie M. (Smith) Mohney.

He was a dairy farmer all his life.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Mohney enjoyed life; he was an avid reader and an avid hunter.

He enjoyed all of the flowers that surrounded his home, and he also enjoyed watching the birds at his bird feeder.

Newcome puts up 36 in Lady Chucks' win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The last time the Lady Chucks and the Clearfield Lady Bison basketball teams met each other Dec. 20, the game was a high-scoring affair that ended in double overtime with Clearfield outscoring Punxsy 60-55. Friday night, the two teams met again in another shootout-style game, and Punxsy's Taylor Newcome put up 36 points to help ensure that the Lady Chucks grabbed a 68-55 victory on their home court in the rematch.

Jury selection begins Monday for Rebert trial

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The selection of 12 jurors and four alternates for the upcoming trial of Steven Patrick Rebert will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Rebert, formerly of Emporium, faces double homicide charges in the shooting deaths of Victoria Lynn Shugar and her husband, James Shugar — also known as Wayne Shugar — both 61, who were found dead April 12, 2010, in their Coal Tipple Road home, Brockway.

Thomas E. Austen, 69, Sigel, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at home.

He was born June 15, 1942, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Edwin Armstrong and Margaret B. (Hanlon) Austen.

May 14, 1977, in Sigel, he married Barbara J. Burford, who survives.

Mr. Austen worked in elementary education for the Brookville Area School District for 10 years and retired as the safety supervisor from National Fuel Gas.
