REYNOLDSVILLE â Jefferson County Republican Committee President Troy Harper told party supporters Thursday that just as around the country, there is a movement growing close to home: Itâs called Occupy Jefferson County.
But, he noted, itâs not like the other âoccupiedâ cities such as New York and Pittsburgh.
BROOKVILLE â The Philadelphia Italian General Consulate testified in a special hearing Thursday at the Jefferson County Courthouse in the post-conviction appeal for Robert G. Rega of Punxsutawney, saying he possibly could have received additional legal assistance as an Italian National during his state appeal from February 2003 through Jan. 15, 2008.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Lady Chucks' volleyball team honored its seniors prior to Thursday night's game against the Lady Raiders of Brook-ville, and all four seniors â Cassie Cook, Janie Depp-Hutchinson, Brooke Doney and Tori Martin â were put in positions they weren't used to as they played the entire way around.
But the seniors stepped up and played incredibly well against the Lady Raiders, sweeping them in three games, 25-15, 25-14, 25-14.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Chucks will honor the senior members of their squad in a ceremony tonight at Jack LaMarca Stadium, but Punxsy hopes to honor them in another manner, as well: With a victory.
SLIPPERY ROCK â The Punxsy boys' cross country team concluded its regular season Thursday by participating in the Tri State Cross Country Meet in Slippery Rock â a meet that hosted 58 teams in the boys' category.
Punxsy finished 37th in the meet, and although Punxsy head coach John Smith said he would have liked to finish around 30th, he noted that muddy course conditions made for tough sledding for his team.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â While Punxsy's varsity volleyball team defeated the Curwensville Lady Tide Tuesday night in Punxsutawney, the junior varsity team picked up a victory of its own in two games, 25-20, 25-13.
Punxsy was strong at the net, which has become a regular occurrence, both offensively and defensively.
Nicole DiPietro had three kills in the first game, and Bella Gallina picked up a block.
Punxsy's serving has been a strong suit all year, and Tuesday, Alyssa Reitz and Ivy Phillips each had four aces in the first game to continue the trend.
DUBOIS â The DuBois Beavers ninth-grade football team took advantage of an early Punxsy turnover and a quick three-and-out on the Chucks' second drive to score twice in the first four minutes of the game, and the Beavers' defense pitched a shutout as DuBois went on to win 54-0.
After receiving the opening kickoff, Punxsy started its first drive at its own 35-yard line, but fumbled on the first play, and DuBois took over at the 24.
DuBois running back Devin Clark opened the game for the Beavers with a 14-yard run for a first down.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â In a pair of full-team efforts, the Lady Chucks middle school basketball teams each defeated the Lady Raiders of Brookville Wednesday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy's eighth-graders trailed 4-2 after the first quarter, but outscored Brookville 11-3 in the second and never looked back, going on to win 30-19.
While everyone didn't score for the eighth-grade squad, every team member played a contributing role, Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson said.
Henry J. âGuyâ Brink, 84, Glen Campbell, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 13, 1927, in Glen Campbell, Banks Township, a son of the late Edward âFatsâ and Anna (Janocha) Brink.
April 19, 1952, he married his wife of 59 years, Charlotte C. (Hollen) Brink, who survives..
Mr. Brink served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1946 to 1947.
Clarence Eugene Swarmer, 72, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at home.
He was born April 19, 1939, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Robert and Margaret Bonelle (Fullerton) Swarmer.
Sept. 13, 1975, he married the former Shirley Ann Daisher, who survives.
Mr. Swarmer servedÂ his country during the Vietnam era as a U.S. Marine and later served in the Army National Guard.
He worked as a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driverâs license examiner in Punxsutawney.
