PUNXSUTAWNEY â His 143 victories were the sixth-most in District IX history and by far the most ever by a Punxsutawney Area High School wrestler. His 92 pins were second-highest in District IX lore, two behind the record holder. He won four district titles, reached the state tournament twice and earned a regional title once during his four-year career.
Though he didn't compete at a school that has ever been associated with the best in the district, Punxsy senior Kody Young just completed a career that ranks up with the best in the area.
BROOKVILLE â Two former Jefferson County Commissioners will remain on the spring primary ballot, despite problems with some of the signatures on their petitions, as well as the circulators of their petitions filed to run for the commission.Â
Two county residents â Alan E. Groves, of Falls Creek, and David C. Hoffman, of Brookville â requested that Judge John Foradora strike the names of Ira Sunderland, of Punxsutawney, and David W. Black, of Brookville, from the ballot for the May 17 primary election.
Richard Decker, 67, Marion Center, died Friday, March 18, 2011, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Â
He was born June 21, 1943, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Bud and Jessie Decker.
He was married to his wife of 44 years, Tootie.
Mr. Decker served in the U.S. Army, based in Korea, with an honorable discharge in 1963.
Mary M. Wiant, 88, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Jefferson Manor, Brookville.
She was born May 1, 1922, in Knox Dale, a daughter of the late Joseph B. and Bertha A. (Dinger) Martin.
She was married to Merle Newhouse, who preceded her in death. She then married Frank L. Davis, who also preceded her in death. She then married Arnold Wiant, who also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Wiant was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Punxsutawney, and she was a retired store manager, having worked for Artley's, Dora Dale and Fashion Bug in DuBois.
Phillip Paul Pavlak, 92, Punxsutawney, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at home.
Mr. Pavlak was born April 27, 1918, in Brackenridge, the youngest son of Vincenty Pawlak (Krakow, Poland) and Rosalla (Wojick) Pawlak (Warsaw, Poland).
He was married to Verda Mae (Davis) Pavlak, who preceded him in death April 25, 1995.
He lived the majority of his life in Natrona and Natrona Heights.
Mr. Pavlak was employed at Allegheny Ludlum Steel for 46 years, except for time in the service of his country during World War II.
William âBillâ C. Charles Jr., 77, Glen Campbell (Smithport), died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Hamilton, a son of the late William Clair and Bertha (Johnson) Charles Sr.
Aug. 14, 1965, he married his wife of more than 45 years, Ruth A. (Brickell) Charles, who survives, of Glen Campbell.
Mr. Charles was a member of the Smithport United Methodist Church.

BIG RUN â On the luckiest day in March, the spring peepers have spoken â er, peeped.
John London, the official Frog Man, or âPeeper Watcherâ of Big Run, reported that while walking through the Big Run swamp, he heard the frogs peep around 5:47 p.m. Thursday â St. Patrickâs Day â thus heralding the arrival of spring, according to the legend.
Last week, London said he hoped the tiny peepers would peep before the annual Peepers Banquet, which is scheduled for Sunday at the War Memorial â and Thursday, he got his wish.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council approved the purchase of a new fire engine for the Elk Run Fire Company.
Elk Run Chief Bryan Smith said the bids were opened last Friday, with Ferrara Fire Apparatus Inc., based in Holden, La., as the low bidder at $372,509.
The truck will be constructed in Louisiana and contain a six-person cab, a 1,000-gallon water tank, a 30-gallon compressed air foam system (CAFS) tank, and a 1,500-gallon per minute Darly pump.
