Young supervisors dealing with broken pumps

February 12, 2012

WALSTON — Recently, the Young Township Board of Supervisors discussed what to do about replacing 12-year-old grinder pumps throughout the township that continue to break down.

Chairman Andrew Meterko said there is a grinder pump that goes down every time there's a function at one of the churches in the township. The sewer department/township is obligated to repair or replace the grinder pump due to an incentive to encourage residents to sign up for sewage in the township.

He said the reason that many of the pumps burn up is because people throw prohibited items into the sewage system.

Thanks to mild weather Feb. 2, souvenir shop doubled 2011 Groundhog Day sales

February 12, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Talk about irony at its best.

This year's most popular souvenir item — a T-shirt depicting a snow-covered Punxsy Phil, with the advice to "Chill Out" — is a little ironic considering the mild winter weather tourists experienced Feb. 1 and Groundhog Day.

"The nicest thing about this year was no rain, no snow, no ice," Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marlene Lellock said. "That is one of the best things about Groundhog Day 2012."

Magill's three beats the buzzer & DuBois

February 11, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After picking up its first District IX sweep of the sea- son Tuesday at St. Marys, the Lady Chucks basketball team hoped to make it two consecutive sweeps when the DuBois Lady Beavers came to town Friday, and the Lady Chucks pulled the feat off with a thrilling 34-31 victory that came down to the last second.

Punxsy seemed to be in control after outscoring the Lady Beavers 21-12 in the first half, but DuBois stormed back in the second half. DuBois outscored Punxsy, 10-7, in the third quarter to narrow the lead to six points.

First-half woes lead to Chucks' demise on road

February 11, 2012

DUBOIS — Punxsy's boys' basketball team was outscored 27-11 in the first half of Friday night's game at DuBois, and despite battling back and playing stellar defense in the second half, the Chucks were unable to overcome the deficit in a 42-30 loss to the Beavers.

The news wasn't all bad for Punxsy Friday night, though, as with Bradford's loss at Brookville, the Chucks did clinch the No. 1 seed at the District IX Class AAA playoffs in March.

YMCA to host run/walk to honor Brookville teen

February 11, 2012

BROOKVILLE — Those who were closest to him said Connor Gerg could make friends with anyone.

This was especially true at school and at the Brookville YMCA, Tina Householder said, where Connor spent most of his time.

"Although I wasn't in school with him, I saw that he had such a gift of being friends with everybody," Householder said. "And he often helped the underdog. He was such a kind, kind kid."

Sunday, Feb. 19, the Brookville YMCA is hosting Share the Love, a run/walk event to honor the life Connor lived.
