Raiders take down No. 2 in state, go 3-2 in Ultimate Duals

BROOKVILLE — The Ultimate Duals are known as one of the most prestigious Class AA wrestling tournaments in the state.

Four of the top six teams, along with two other top-notch programs, visited Brookville for the 16th-annual Johnson Motors Ultimate Duals.

The Raiders had a successful day, most notably earning a win over second-ranked Fort LeBoeuf, 34-30, in their second match of the day.

Souvenir shop stocking up on Groundhog Day goods

PUNXSUTAWNEY — 2012 is the year without the plush. But for those behind the scenes at Phil's Souvenir Shop, it's the people — not necessarily the items — who make a Groundhog Day successful.

"I think the tourists and the people who come into the store are the most interesting," said Mary Ann Jacobson, the shop's head clerk.

"They're all happy to be here. When they're looking at your stuff, you see them smiling and laughing, and it makes for a happy atmosphere."

Edward D. Battaglia, 95

Edward D. Battaglia, 95, of Brookville, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Jefferson Manor.

He was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Kane, a son of the late Charles and Mary (Gillotti) Battaglia.

May 28, 1938, he married the former Josephine F. Cesario, who preceded him in death Nov. 22, 2004.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

He was also a member of the Brookville Eagles and the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Battaglia was an entrepreneur. In the 1950s, he and his wife owned the R & J Bar in Pine Creek Township, which later became the R & J Motel.

Richard B. Elkin, 87

Richard B. Elkin, 87, Punxsutawney, died Friday Jan. 20, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Oct. 14, 1924, in West Mahoning Township, Indiana County, the son of the late Duff and Nellie (Marshall) Elkin.

June 26, 1948, he married Kathryn (Nichol) Elkin, who preceded him in death Oct. 17, 1978.

Dec. 8, 1979, he married Ruth (Kight) Elkin, who survives.

Mr. Elkin was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church of Trade City, where he was a Sunday School Teacher.

He loved gardening and traveling.

Bradford proves to be a royal pain

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On a night when Punxsutawney Area High School announced the annual Winter Sports Queen and Princess, the Bradford Owls rained on Punxsy's processional, as the Owls pulled away in the third quarter to earn a 50-42 District-IX league win over the Chucks on their home court.

"It's especially tough to lose at home," Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal said after the game. "We've talked about protecting our house and winning here, and now, we have made things interesting in league play."

16th-annual Ultimate Duals Preview

BROOKVILLE — Some of the top wrestling squads in the state will be making their way to Brookville Junior-Senior High School today to participate in the 16th-annual Johnson Motors Ultimate Duals.

"It's the second-, third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-ranked teams in the state, all in our gym (today)," Brookville head coach Dave Klepfer said. "There's really no breaks."

REBERT DAY 5: Victim’s DNA found on Rebert’s boots, witness says

BROOKVILLE — Testimony on the fifth day of Steven Rebert’s double homicide trial revealed that while performing a DNA profile, Pennsylvania State Police forensic scientists found the DNA of one of the victims, Wayne Shugar, on Rebert’s work boots.

Rebert, 46, formerly of Emporium, faces double homicide charges in the shooting deaths of Wayne and Victoria Shugar, both 61, who were found dead April 12, 2010, in their Coal Tipple Road home, Brockway.

BROOKVILLE — Two acquaintances of Steven P. Rebert took the witness stand for the prosecution in his double murder trial Thursday, both testifying to Rebert’s abuse of drugs — mainly Oxycontin.

Rebert, formerly of Emporium, faces charges in the shooting deaths of Wayne and Vickie Shugars, both 61, who were found dead April 12, 2010 in their home on Coal Tipple Road, Brockway.

First, District Attorney Jeffrey Burkett called Marc Cirrincione of Clarence, N.Y., a friend of Rebert’s since the late 1980s.
