St. Marys is strong where the Chucks are to pick up a win

ST. MARYS — Sometimes in sports, a team runs into another squad that simply matches up well against it. Tuesday, the Punxsy boys' track team met up with a St. Marys Dutch team that was "strong where we are," according to Punxsy head coach John Smith, and St. Marys came out victorious, 95-55.

St. Marys won the 3200-meter relay — an event in which Punxsy has shown strength this season — to open the event with a time of 10:43, and while the Chucks pulled close a few times throughout the meet, the Dutch would never trail.

Robert Wayne "Corney" Johnson Sr., 86

Robert Wayne "Corney" Johnson Sr., 86, Millcreek, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012, after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 15, 1925, in Bells Landing, Clearfield Township, a son of the late Wayne and Wanda (Hatch) Johnson.

For 68 years, he was married to Eleanor White Johnson, who survives.

He attended Mahaffey High School in Clearfield County and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

The Lady Chucks are off and running, jumping and throwing

ST. MARYS — Last Wednesday, the Punxsy junior high girls' track team traveled to St. Marys to open its season against the Lady Dutch, and despite a 100-50 loss, the Lady Chucks showed some promising signs in their first meet.

St. Marys opened the meet with a victory in the 3200-meter relay to take a 5-0 lead, and the Lady Dutch never forfeited the lead during the remainder of the meet.

Council: Resource officer is a great idea, but who will pay for it?

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During their monthly meeting Monday, several of the members of Punxsutawney Borough Council said they supported the idea of a police resource officer at Punxsutawney Area High School, but asked who is going to pay for it.

“There’s a need for a resource officer to assist with the prevention of crime at the high school,” said Georgette Pennington, a concerned parent who, last month, discussed her concerns with the Punxsutawney Area School Board.

Pennington said a police resource officer would help expand crime prevention with students and in the community, as well.

County locations focusing on different literacies during National Library Week

BROOKVILLE — This week, America’s libraries are taking a proactive approach to promoting literacy.

From April 8 to 14, libraries across the country — including the Jefferson County Library System — will celebrate National Library Week.

“We want to let our community residents know libraries are not just recreation,” Mengle Memorial Library Director Darlene Marshall said.

“We’ve got education, and our schools depend on our libraries. When the cuts in the school funding happen, they turn more to libraries.”

Punxsy library plans special party Saturday during National Library Week

PUNXSUTAWNEY — So, do you have an overdue library book somewhere in your house?

This is your week to return it to the Punxsutawney Memorial Library — no fines, no questions asked.

Fine-Free Week is part of the Punxsy library’s recognition of National Library Week, which runs from Monday through Sunday across the United States.

Recently, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners declared this week National Library Week in the county.

Esther E. Gray, 87

Esther E. Gray, 87, DuBois, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012, at the DuBois Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Paradise, a daughter of the late John and Iva (Green) Reed.

During World War II, she was an airplane riveter in Buffalo, N.Y.

Jan. 12, 1946, she married William Gray, who preceded her in death in 1998.

During her marriage, Mrs. Gray worked at Brockway Glass, BF Goodrich, Jefferson Electronics, Sears and Riverside.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 30 years, as well as the P.T.A. and Meals on Wheels.

Alan R. Rowland, 57

Alan R. Rowland, 57, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, April 7, 2012, at his home.

He was born March 15, 1955, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Dalvin R. and B. Jane (Shirley) Rowland.

He was married to Denise (Budihas) Rowland, who survives.

Mr. Rowland was a graduate of Williamsport Community College and was a machinist and welder by trade.

He was an avid outdoorsman and a talented gunsmith.

He was a member of the Punxsutawney Alliance Church.

In 1975, Mr. Rowland was a recipient of the Carnegie Hero Award.

Janice Marlene Wagner, 54

Janice Marlene Wagner, 54, Stroudsburg, and formerly of Smicksburg, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Easton after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.

She was born Sept. 13, 1957, in Kittanning, a daughter of Vernon K. and Betty Jean (Barrett) Lightner.

May 15, 1998, she married Jeff Wagner of Stroudsburg, who survives.

Mrs. Wagner graduated from Dayton High School, Dayton, and Lenape Vocational Technical School in Ford City.

Opening season win for the Chucks' junior high track program

ST. MARYS — The Punxsy boys' middle school track team opened its season last Wednesday with its first win over the St. Marys Flying Dutch — 78-72 — in St. Marys.

The meet opened with the 3200-meter relay, which St. Marys claimed for an early 5-0 lead.

The Chucks rebounded with a sweep at 110-meter hurdles, though, to take a 9-5 lead, and while the meet grew close, Punxsy never trailed again.

Ryan Jones took first in the hurdles event with a time of 21.39 seconds.

Derek Cameron (22.30 seconds) and Brendon Stinson (22.9 seconds) completed the Punxsy sweep.
