Constantino, Spack named Winter Sports MVPs

April 11, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The votes are in and counted, and it's official: Seth Spack and Jensen Constantino are The Spirit's 2011-12 Winter Sports Most Valuable Players.

Just over 760 ballots were cast in all, and The Spirit's readers selected Spack and Constantino for the awards.

Spack, a senior wrestler for the Chucks during the winter season, surpassed the 100-win mark, passed PAHS grad Matt Means for second all-time in Punxsy history for wins and won the District-IX championship at 152 pounds this year.

The Zak Zone

April 11, 2012

This time of year may just be the perfect time of year, as far as I'm concerned: Especially as far as the sports calendar goes.

Combining the budding of new life growing from the warm weather — though we've been mistreated with some colder-than-we-would-like type of weather over the past few days — with the sports calendar unfolding before us in early April does something to warm my heart.

After the rush of March Madness, the sports calendar quiets down a bit, though it is revving up for perhaps its busiest season of them all.

VINYL FOREVER: Indiana’s Backstreet among indie spots saluted on Record Store Day

April 11, 2012

INDIANA — Before the cassette tape, the compact disc and the MP3, people listened to music with the help of a decent turntable, a good needle and a 33-, 45- or 78-rpm record.

And Saturday, April 21 — Record Store Day — is a day that independent (i.e., indie) record stores celebrate music in the vinyl medium.

Youngsters invited to join Jr. Groundhog Club

April 11, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Sure, it’s a group of older gentlemen in top hats and tuxedoes who promote and perpetuate Groundhog Day, but Punxsutawney Phil and his prognostications are just as important for youngsters, as well.

That’s the whole idea behind the Jr. Groundhog Club, a new club that has been established for Punxsy Phil’s friends who are 12 and under.

Edie Hinkle, Smicksburg, said she wasn’t sure what a resource officer is, but felt something needs to be done about drugs in school.

District: No need for officer

April 10, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Following several weeks of criticism from residents about an alleged hands-off attitude about drugs in the district — specifically Punxsutawney Area High School — the Punxsutawney Area School Board fired back at Tuesday’s meeting.

“I take offense that we are accused of having a drug problem in our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe, also saying that he felt it was unfair to categorize the district that way with no real evidence.

Two injured in Henderson Township house fire

April 10, 2012

HENDERSON TOWNSHIP — The cause of an early-morning fire that destroyed a home at 165 Pine Dr., Henderson Township, is undetermined, according to the Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal.

The fire began at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday in the garage at the home owned by Robert Dominick, said Charles Gross, fire marshal.

The alarm was turned in by a neighbor, and both occupants were able to evacuate the home, which was heavily damaged by the blaze.

Gross said the fire began in the garage, which was completely destroyed in the blaze, thus hindering the investigation.
