Niver resigns from Big Run Borough Council; Rick Rinehart appointed as replacement

BIG RUN — Big Run Borough Council accepted the resignation of Councilman John Niver and appointed a former council member to take his place at Monday's meeting.

Former council member Rick Rinehart was appointed in a motion by council to replace Niver on borough council and as a member of the Big Run Area Municipal Authority (BRAMA).

Nick Lantz, council president, said Niver submitted his resignation from both boards for personal reasons.

Young Township audit continues after discrepancies found in May

WALSTON — The audit and investigation into the Young Township sewage and general accounts discrepancies continues, after it was revealed at last month's meeting that discrepancies were discovered when a sewage customer disputed and produced his receipts to prove that he was not delinquent.

At the May 9 meeting, Carl Vulcan, CPA, and forensic accountant of the Cantanese Group, planned to report his findings when township Solicitor Kipp Lukehart, advised the Board of Supervisors to enter an executive session before making any of the findings public.

Two vehicles collide along Route 119, 436 intersection

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — No injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Route 119 and Route 436, Young Township.

One of the vehicles involved in the accident, a Dodge Neon, appeared to have sustained disabling damage, and a Jeep Wrangler sustained front-end damage in the crash. Both were towed from the scene by Rebuck's South Side Service.

No further details regarding the accident were available at Spirit press time.

Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police were on scene and investigating the accident.

Ishman, Lingenfelter's combined no-no opens All-Star season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy starter Alli Ishman pitched five no-hit innings, and reliever Kylee Lingenfelter finished the job, pitching one inning to complete a combined no-hitter, and the Punxsy nine and 10-year-old softball All-Stars cruised to a 9-0 victory over Brockway in their opening game of the tournament.

Despite the strong pitching performance, though, Punxsy head coach Mike Ishman was sure to point out after the game that his team's victory came from a full-team effort.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — While the 11- and 12-year-old Punxsy softball All-Stars opened their season with a convincing 9-0 win over Brockway Sunday afternoon, the majority of the other Punxsy All-Star teams are just beginning their practices in preparation for their own tournaments.

Including the softball team that already started, Punxsy has eight teams entered in tournaments this year, with the only exceptions being that Punxsy has no Senior Little League team in either softball or baseball.

A list of the All-Star rosters — along with information on their first game — follows.

July trial set for alleged shooter

BROOKVILLE — The trial of a Pittsburgh man who allegedly shot two Punxsutawney men last September has been set for the middle of July in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court.

Jury selection for the trial of Christopher L. Thornhill, 24, is scheduled for Monday, July 9, with the trial scheduled to begin Thursday, July 19, at the Jefferson County courthouse, said Amanda Marley, Jefferson County President Judge John Foradora's law clerk.

Area first responders participated in a mass casualty drill Saturday behind Smith Hauling in Oliveberg. In the mock crash, a school bus, car and sprayer truck were involved in a three-vehicle accident that involved toxic chemicals. Central, Lindsey, Oliver, Perry, Summerville, Knox and McCalmont fire companies, along with Jefferson County EMS, Summerville Ambulance and StatMedeVac participated in the drill, which was hosted by Oliver Township Volunteer Fire Company and Jefferson County Emergency Services.

An Aged Man Ends His Life Through Sickness and Despondency

James Buckley, a coal miner at Shawmut, committed suicide by hanging on Sunday morning. He had been in poor health for a year or more, and it is thought became despondent over his condition and while in that frame of mind ended his life.

Amy Jo Hyde, 43

Amy Jo Hyde, 43, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, June 16, 2012, at home.

She was born June 1, 1969, in Alexander Bay, New York, a daughter of Elmer Leslie Hyde Sr., who survives, of New York, and Mary Ellen (Manson) Hyde, who survives, of Sykesville.

She was a very thoughtful person who always managed to have small gifts for the little children in her family.

Mary Georganne Riccardo, 92

Mary Georganne Riccardo, 92, Rossiter, died Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Jefferson Manor.

She was born Dec. 6, 1919, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Archibald and Jenny (Senott) Serian.

She married James Theodore Riccardo, who preceded her in death in 1998.

Mrs. Riccardo was a member of the Church of The Resurrection in Rossiter.

She worked as a nurse at the Adrian Hospital and later retired from the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She enjoyed cooking and cleaning.
