Early and often: I-Medical pours it on in win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — I-Medical scored at least once in five of its six trips to the plate Wednesday evening in Punxsutawney, including five in the first two frames, to cruise to a 10-3 victory over Marion Center in Indiana County Youth League action.

The home squad never trailed in the contest and used strong pitching and timely hitting to pick up its 10 runs on just eight hits.

Punxsy starter Dakotah Byers allowed one runner to reach base in the first inning but still managed to retire the side in order with the help of his catcher, Clayton Dale.

A young man with local ties — Jacob Mahan, who resides in Camarillo, Calif. with parents Dan and Jacqui, but is grandson to Bob and Phyllis Mahan and nephew to Joe Mahan (pictured, right with Jacob), all of Punxsutawney — is playing baseball on the NCAA's largest stage, as he and his nationally-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks are currently playing in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Arkansas is 2-0 in the tournament thus far, with their most recent victory coming Monday over South Carolina, 2-1.

LeBron James has proclaimed him-self “King James,” and of late, he has often lived up to the nickname, despite drawing the criticism of — well, of everyone — for his inability to “come through in the clutch.”

Rumor has it, LeBron even has “King James” written on his bicycle — proof positive that sometimes, these celebrities do remember how to be kids.

Veterans honored with ‘Day on the Water’ event in Brookville

BROOKVILLE — U.S. Army veteran Bill Kellman was wary.

After hearing about Project Healing Waters, a program which aids in the rehabilitation of disabled veterans through fly fishing outings, he wasn't sure if it was for him.

At the time he learned of the program, Kellman, a Vietnam vet, said he struggled with socializing.

"If my wife were here, she would tell you I never got out of the house," he said. "I would just stay home because I didn't like dealing with people. I had no friends, I had nobody I wanted in my life except my wife."

Library celebrates renovations, thanks community

BROCKWAY — After a three-year capital campaign drive, and numerous renovations, the Mengle Memorial Library unveiled its new look in grand fashion before 100 people earlier this month.

The library, which serves as Jefferson County's Library System Headquarters, held an open house to highlight the changes that will improve the library experience of every patron.

Dr. Glenis Chester Moore, 80

June 20, 2012

Dr. Glenis Chester Moore, 80, Worthville, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born July 21, 1931, in Brookville, a son of the late Foster and Maime (Bish) Moore.

Dec. 21, 1956, he married Doris Naomi Brownlee, who survives.

He was a Doctor of Chiropratic.

His passion was sharing the word of God through preaching and ministering to others.

Mildred Jean Smith, 87

June 20, 2012

Mildred Jean Smith, 87, Punxsutawney, died after a short illness, Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Mahoning Riverside Manor.

She was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Earl W. and Thelma (Blume) Resinger.

She married Ralph R. Smith, who preceded her in death Nov. 9, 2004.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Cloe United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving relatives include a son, Thomas R. Smith and wife Mary Kay of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a brother, Robert Resinger and wife Dorothy of Lansdale.

Senior Legion sweeps past Creps United

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's John J. Fisher Post 62 Senior Legion team had an all-around solid performance with pitcher Cory Geer throwing a three-hit shuout and the offense scoring 10 runs over four-plus innings on nine hits to pick up a 10-0, five-inning win over Creps United Publications Tuesday in Punxsutawney.

"We swung the bats pretty well; we ran the bases pretty well; and we got a pretty good pitching performance from Cory," Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey said after the game. "It's pretty simple. When you do those things, you'll usually come out on top."

Fezell Enterprises explodes for 20 in win over United

INDIANA — Already ahead 10-6 entering the visitor's half of the seventh inning, Fezell Enterprises put up a 10-spot and went on to earn a 20-6 victory over United in Indiana County Youth League action Monday evening.

Fezell started the game with a six-spot right out of the shoot, and it added three more in the second to open up a 9-1 lead before things settled down until the seventh inning.

Joey DiPietro led the offensive explosion with a 5-for-5 night, which included a double, two runs scored and two driven in.

The 2012 Western Pennsylvania Laurel Festival Queen’s Pageant was held Tuesday night at Brookville Jr.-Sr. High School. Eight contestants from western Pennsylvania competed for the title, which is awarded annually to a young woman between the ages of 16 and 20. This year, Kathryn Steele (center), a graduate of Brookville Jr.-Sr. High School, was crowned the 2012 Western Pennsylvania Laurel Festival Queen.
