Girls' basketball outduels Brookville

Punxsy's girls' basketball team jumped out to an early lead and managed to hold on for a 38-32 victory over Route 36 Rival Brookville Thursday night in Punxsutawney.

Chucks fall to tough Cameron County squad

The Chucks basketball team lost to a tough Cameron County squad on the road on Wednesday night, 51-40. Punxsy's Dylan Huey (pictured here) was the Chucks' top scorer with 15 points.

Today's PAHS schedule has just one contest on it, as the girls' basketball team will play host to Brookville. JVs start at 6 p.m., and the varsity will take the court afterward.

Council approves sale of house on repository list

Punxsutawney Borough Council approved the purchase of this house, located on Cherry Street from the repository list by Susan Koehler, Brooklyn, New York. Fire dept. boot drive proceeds go to helping needy families

The Punxsutawney Fire Department distributed food baskets and gave donations to eight area food banks on Monday. Scott Depp, Central Fire Department chief, said $8,136.75 was raised during the annual boot drive held Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 and that they distributed baskets to 14 needy families. Chamber’s second-annual ornament features image of Barclay Square

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you participated in the Christmas ornament collection from the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce last year, then get ready for part two.

Michele Neal, Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, said that this year's ornament features a view of the bandstand through a cannon in Barclay Square.

Dr. William J. Lynch, 65

December 8, 2014

Dr. William J. Lynch, 65, of Brookville, formerly of Belle Vernon, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2014.

He was born April 28, 1949. He was the beloved husband of 42 years to Kathleen M. (Kraus) Lynch; father of Christine (Jason) Hoffman and Jennifer Lynch; and grandfather of Aidan, Rory and Taryn Hoffman.

He is also survived by his mother, Helen C. Lynch.

He was preceded in death by his father, Minor G. Lynch; and brother David M. Lynch, PhD.

Robert T. Milligan Sr., 95

December 5, 2014

Robert T. Milligan Sr., 95, of Valier, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Wellington Heights Personal Care Home.

He was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late William D. and Irene (Bortz) Milligan.

On Jan. 4, 1941, he married Frances E. Dilts, who preceded him in death.

He was the owner of Milligan’s Store in Valier for 35 years and was also the postmaster for 30 years.

He was a member of the Valier United Methodist Church. He was a member of the John W. Jenks Masonic Lodge 534 for over 50 years, where he was a 33rd Degree Mason and was Master of the lodge in 1965.

Marian M. Martin, 82

December 5, 2014

Marian M. Martin, 82, of Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Porter, a daughter of the late Blair and Freda (Powell) Gahagan.

On March 25, 1950, she married Vernon C. Martin, who preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 2011.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church and the Trade City Mahoning Grange.

Lady Chucks open season with win at Tip-Off Tourney

December 5, 2014

Friday night, the Lady Chucks opened their season with a 40-26 victory over Westmont Hilltop in the Marion Center Tip-Off Tournament. In this photo, Punxsy's Nicole DiPietro (20) rises above the Westmont defense to hit a three-pointer — the one that would give Punxsy the lead for good in the third quarter. DiPietro finished with a team-high 10 points in a balanced Lady Chucks attack.
